 “Art” in Dumaguete

The Silliman University Cultural Affairs Committee and the Cebu-based production company, Little Boy Productions, open 2009 with “Art,” the provocative Tony award-winning comedy by Yasmina Reza, with a one-day staging at the Claire Isabel McGill Luce Auditorium in Dumaguete City this January 10, 2009.

Starring three of Manila’s top theater actors: Audie Gemora, Jaime del Mundo, and Bart Guingona, “Art” revolves around the friendship of three men who fall out when one of them buys an expensive modern work of art that is in fact a blank white canvas. The painting causes hysterical chaos amongst the friends as they argue about its merits.

Translated from the French by Christopher Hampton, the play has been translated into more than 35 languages, including a Tagalog adaptation that played Cebu and Manila in 2007, starring Ricky Davao, Michael de Mesa, and Jett Pangan.

The original English language production took the West End by storm when it opened in 1996, winning both the London Evening Standard Award for Best Play and the Olivier Award for Best Comedy. It’s also made its mark on Broadway where it opened two years later winning a coveted Tony Award for Best Play before becoming the most successful play in Broadway history. This Philippine production is directed by Bart Guingona of Actor’s Actors Inc, with lighting design by John Neil Ilao Batalla.

Tickets are still available at the College of Performing Arts Office and the Luce Auditorium Office, and at the theater lobby before every show.
