In West Side Story: Karylle's performance makes mom Zsa Zsa proud

- Ricky L. Calderon -

Ms. Zsa Zsa Padilla is very proud of the performance of her daughter Karylle at the press night of the musicale “The West Side Story” that was held last Wednesday at the Meralco Theater. Karylle portrayed Maria opposite Christian Bautista who played Tony.

In our interview with her after the show, the Divine Diva said she cried while viewing Karylle’s performance.

“I cried at their wedding scene. I told myself this is how I’d feel once Karylle gets married. I also cried when Christian’s character died. I was stunned by the death scene because I forgot the story already since I only got to watch the movie version,” said Zsa Zsa, who was misty-eyed as she spoke.

“It was my first time to watch her perform as Maria and of course, I’m very, very proud of her. All singers and actresses dream of being given the chance to perform on stage because very few producers ever do musicals in the movies. It’s very fulfilling to perform onstage and what you’ll learn in theater is very valuable.”

Did you imagine K doing a musicale?

“This material is hard to do. What we saw tonight is just a dress rehearsal. They are still a lot of things that they can do to improve on it. I am going to watch it again. I was the one who encouraged K to do this because she has everything to gain with the experience,” said the proud mother.

Zsa Zsa, who was also very nervous while watching K perform, said she would invite her friends to watch “West Side Story.” But when asked to comment on K’s performance, she politely declined, saying with a laugh that she might be labeled a stage mother. But she felt confident enough to say that K did a very good job because she played the character well.

“West Side Story” is being staged at the Meralco Theater every weekend, starting September 5.

After a very, very long wait, the new series of Judy Ann Santos titled “Humingi Ka Sa Langit” is finally airing soon. The series pairs Juday with Derek Ramsey (who was one of her leading men in “Ysabella”). This was supposed to be the follow-up project for Juday and Derek whose tandem made quite an impact in “Ysabella.”

But what was supposed to be a birthday presentation for Juday in 2007 turned out to be a project that was to be shown much, much later—in fact, more than a year later. Well, it better be worth the long wait.

But before the airing of the new series, Juday and Derek will be seen at the Grand Big Night of Pinoy Dream Academy to be held on September 13 at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Likewise, Juday is happy that her movie “Ploning” was chosen as official Philippine entry to the Best Foreign Language Film category of the 2009 Oscar Awards. On other movie news, Juday is spearheading the 48th anniversary presentation of Regal Entertainment “Matakot Ka Sa Kulam,” which is directed by Jun Lana. The movie reunites her with Dennis Trillo, who appeared with her in “Aishite Masu.”
