Viewers prefer GMA-7’s coverage of recent events

-

TV ratings reveal that GMA Network’s coverage of big events are preferred by more viewers.

Figures from AGB Nielsen Media Research Philippines on Mega Manila household ratings show GMA’s news coverage of recent events had a larger share of viewership.

When news broke out that actor Rudy Fernandez died, GMA readily deployed a news team to the actor’s residence and had a live report right away delivered in Q-11’s Balitanghali.

On June 9, 24 Oras’ coverage of Fernandez’ wake got a household TV rating of 29.8% against TV Patrol World’s 21.2%.

On June 12, GMA’s Flash Report intruded Eat Bulaga’s programming for the coverage of Daboy’s interment. Flash Report posted a rating of 33.6% while ABS’ coverage rated 16.7%. 24 Oras managed a rating of 31.1% versus TV Patrol World’s 22.2% on the same day (Daboy’s burial).

Meanwhile, 24 Oras’ coverage on the kidnapping of Ces Drilon for three days of consecutive newscasts also won bigger audiences compared to TV Patrol World’s. On June 16, 24 Oras rated 30.4% while TV Patrol World rated only 21%. On June 17, 24 Oras posted 30.5% while the opponent got 18.5%. Until June 18, 24 Oras led with a rating of 30.1% while rival had only 23.8%.

Insiders also observed that only journalists from GMA news teams had bullet proof vests while on duty in this potentially risky assignment.

GMA likewise managed to get more viewers during the latest calamity to hit the country. At the height of Typhoon Frank last June 22, Flash Report increased bulletins and intruded in SOP’s programming. The report garnered a rating of 16.8%, 5% higher than ABS-CBN’s ASAP ‘08.

24 Oras had a higher rating than competition on June 23, the first weekday after typhoon Frank hit many cities in the South over that weekend.

24 Oras posted a 33.6% against TV Patrol World’s 20.2%. Both news programs’ banner stories included the damages incurred from typhoon Frank and the sinking of the MV Princess of the Stars.

GMA was also ahead in showing underwater footage of the sunken ship. (PR)
