Kc Concepcion to make big screen debut

- Ricky L. Calderon -

KC Concepcion signed a three-picture contract with Star Cinema on Wednesday. The contract signing was held at the 14th floor of the ELJ Building. Present during the contract signing were KC’s managers namely Sandra Chavez and Shirley Kuan, ABS-CBN president Ms. Charo Santos and Ms. Malou Santos of Star Cinema.

Part of the three-picture contract is for KC to be directed by Joyce Bernal, Chito Roño and Cathy Garcia-Molina.

For her debut film, KC is doing a light romance to be directed by Joyce Bernal that will start shooting on the third week of this month and is scheduled for release in August.  There is no leading man yet for KC although there are speculations that Richard Gutierrez could be it. But this was denied by KC herself. She said the identity of her leading man would have to remain a secret for this time.

Even Malou Santos, the Star Cinema top honcho, wouldn’t want to reveal the identity of KC’s leading man for her debut film. There are some things being ironed out and they are calling another presscon for it. “I’m not allowed to reveal it pa, eh,” she said.

According to KC, the public will dictate as to who would be her partner for her debut film. Now that she has signed up with Star Cinema, she’s happy that she will soon do her first movie.

“Iba kasi ‘pag movie ang ginawa mo, eh. ‘Yung audience mo, naka-stay lang at pinanonood ka for two hours. Unlike pag TV na may iba silang ginagawa at ‘pag aalis sila, papatayin nila ang TV. Ngayong magiging movie star na ako sa Star Cinema, I really feel like a star,” said KC with a smile.

There is no leading man yet for KC’s second film to be directed by Chito S. Roño and according to a reliable source, Piolo Pascual would be KC’s leading man for her third film to be directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina.

Albert Martinez left for Malaysia yesterday to shoot his scenes for the soap opera that is being shot there with Jericho Rosales and Carmen Soo. This is the first regional soap and a joint venture between Star Cinema and a Malaysian company.

The actor just came back from business trip in Korea (and a vacation with his kids) when Albert received a call from Star Cinema, saying he’s already needed in Malaysia for his scenes.

“If you are familiar with the movie Seraphim Falls (that stars Pierce Brosnan with Liam Neeson), my role is somewhat similar to the role played by Pierce Brosnan. The character I play in the series is the one being blamed by Echo (Jericho) for the death of his father,” said Albert. “We are the ones involved in conflict although Echo has this mistaken notion that I am to blame.”

We had a chance to have a phone interview with Albert yesterday morning before he left for Malaysia.

This is the second time he’s working with Echo in a soap opera. The first one was also in a soap opera in ABS-CBN with Pops Fernandez as co-star.

How does it feel to be part of this project that will be shot in Malaysia, no less? And is the film a first of its kind in the region?

“This is a pioneering project. It’s the very first regional soap opera between two countries (Malaysia and the Philippines). It will be aired simultaneously in the two countries. After we come back in June, we will still be taping for three months here in the Philippines,” said Albert who will be staying in Malaysia for a month while taping for this still untitled soap opera. He further said that majority of the male cast are Pinoys, while the female cast are mostly Malaysians.

Directing the soap is Filipino director Gilbert Perez, who also helmed the soap opera that Albert, Echo and Pops did for ABS-CBN some 10 years ago.

Aside from this project, Albert will be working on a film project in September. He’s also doing a film for Sining Buhay, a foundation that gives grants to indie filmmakers. This is the second year that he’s doing this. The first was in 2006 when he did the indiefilm “Numbalikdiwa” that co-starred him with Maricel Soriano.
