Ruffa’s estranged hubby Yilmaz returns, eludes media

SHOWBIZ DRIBBLE - Salve V. Asis -

Now that Yilmaz Bektas is in town, every showbiz writer wants to interview him. So far no one’s been able to pin him down.

The burning question they want to ask is: Is he dating Zuleyka Rivera, the 20-year-old former Miss Universe from Puerto Rico?

I guess movie scribes are not the only ones interested in Yilmaz’s answer. Ruffa Gutierrez must also be aching to know if the rumor is true.

It was Ruffa who confirmed that her estranged husband had arrived. She reportedly hasn’t seen him yet, but has talked to him on the phone.

Ruffa says she and Yilmaz will be meeting soon to talk about “practical things.” Will Zuleyka be one of those “things”?

Gabby Concepcion has become ABS-CBN’s newest fair-haired boy, judging by the promotional blitz the network has launched for the balikbayan. GMA, on the other hand, is acting like the spurned lover, and has gone to great lengths to remind Gabby of his remaining obligations with GMA Films.

Last week GMA Films President Annette Gozon-Abrogar reiterated to a reporter that Gabby had accepted a down payment from the outfit and therefore cannot accept offers from other companies.

According to reports, the former matinee idol had been paid an initial P1.78 million to star in I.T.A.L.Y. (I Trust And Love You). But as Gabby had explained, he backed out because he did not find the script acceptable.

He has in fact been replaced in the film by Dennis Trillo.

Abrogar steadfastly defended the script and said the film was really meant to be Gabby’s comeback vehicle.

“We fulfilled part of our obligations. We gave him the down payment. Actually, the provisions in our contract said that it’s for one movie but we also have the exclusive right to his second movie if we serve him a notice within three months after the termination of the first movie,” she said.

What we’re seeing is another network tug-of-war over a star. Who will prevail? Your guess is as good as mine.

Ramiele Malubay’s fantastic run in American Idol has finally ended.

The four-foot-eleven-inch Fil-Am was voted out last week, leaving eight finalists to vie for the coveted title.

The voters must have felt Ramielle did not do justice to her choice song, Dolly Parton’s Do I Ever Cross Your Mind. Judges Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson found the performance far from spectacular, and Simon Cowell did not mince words.

“Overall I thought it was forgettable, and I think it was very reminiscent of something you would see and hear on a cruise ship,” Simon sniped.

Brooke White and Kristy Lee Cook had joined Ramielle in the “bottom three” as the lowest vote-getters.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell had another run-in with authorities last week.

She was escorted off a US-bound flight from London after she reportedly went ballistic over a missing luggage of hers.

Apparently one of two bags she had checked in at London’s Heathrow Airport could not be found.

Heathrow’s newly opened terminal had been encountering baggage handling problems, and many passengers had complained of missing luggage.

Campbell was taken to a police station and arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer. She was later released to return on bail in late May.

Last year the supermodel spent five days mopping floors as part of a community service sentence in New York after being found guilty of throwing a mobile phone at her housekeeper during an argument over a pair of jeans.

Talk about the importance of movie credits.

Last week George Clooney withdrew as a member of the Writers Guild of America after the union denied his request for a writing credit on his new film, Leatherheads.

The actor claimed he deserved a writing credit because he helped polished the work of writers Duncan Brantley and Rick Reilly. Clooney also directed, produced and stars in the film.

But the guild turned down his request with a 2-1 vote.

The verdict didn’t sit well with Clooney. “When your own union doesn’t back what you’ve done, the only honorable thing to do is not participate,” he told The Daily Variety.

He has not totally left the union, but has lost his right to vote, cannot run for office or attend membership meetings.

Leatherheads is a comedy about football.

Clooney was nominated for an Oscar two years ago for co-writing Good Night, and Good Luck.
