Upstage’s “Ang Papeles”

-

As one in celebrating the University of the Philippines' Centennial year of existence, CURTAINS-UP Productions presented UPSTAGE in “Ang Papeles”, a Cebuano play rewritten by Rudy Aviles, the artistic consultant, in collaboration with Sal Malto and Prof. Ligaya Rabago-Visaya, the director.

UPSTAGE

In 1980, the University of the Philippines Students' Theater Arts Guild for Entertainment (UPSTAGE) was formally launched by students whose common goal is to advocate local Filipino arts and culture. The organization did not only pave way for students who have the heart for acting but also to give them chances to participate in dancing, singing, directing and scriptwriting.

UPSTAGE has spread local and traditional Filipino theater productions. It did not also close its doors to foreign performing artists who have helped in the advancement of the organization's cultural productions.

In 1983, the group was united in its stand that the goal of UPSTAGE is not only to entertain the audience but to educate them as well. Thus, the last letter of UPSTAGE was formally changed to Education instead of Entertainment.

Through its relevant performances that promote and appreciate our own Filipino culture and arts that seek to uphold freedom, justice, truth and peace, UPSTAGE has been recognized by former UP President Emil Q. Javier, for such advocacy.

For this year, the UP Visayas Chancellor's Committee on Culture and the Arts has chosen UPSTAGE as the recipient of the University Performing Group (UPG) Award which is a great privilege and honor given to the most deserving performing group in UP Visayas.

UPSTAGE, being the oldest existing cultural performing organization of UP Cebu, will continue to serve and promote artistic excellence in music, dance, and most importantly, theater.
