No swimsuits? Miss Cebu has long made it possible
The FREEMAN Entertainment finds out about the story behind the most unique aspect of one of the most prestigious pageants, not just in region, but in the entire country in this brief interview with noted designer Philip Rodriguez, project chair of Miss Cebu.
Q: Why don’t Miss Cebu pageants have swimsuit competitions?
Philip Rodriguez: “It’s been the tradition since 1985. We want to emphasize more on the personality. Because pageants really are more on the beauty and brains aspects. The personality itself covers all the aspects of a person.”
Q: Was there a time that Miss Cebu organizers felt pressured to have a swimsuit portion?
Rodriguez: “We never experienced being pressured to have one, because this is a welcome idea that we will not have a swimsuit competition, and we really stick to that. Instead, we give our candidates a one-month seminar on what they need to equip themselves to become a Good Ambassador of Beauty.”
Q: In the history of the pageant, did it ever have a swimsuit competition?
Rodriguez: Yes, during the first two years of the pageant—1983 and 1984—and then we shifted to the idea of a pageant that emphasizes on the personality.
Q: Is Miss Cebu the only pageant in the country that has no swimsuit competition?

Some of our former Miss Cebu titlists also excelled in their respective fields of expertise, just like Janice Bañez, a recipient of the Golden Shell Excellence Awards for product designing.
