Kapamilya, Winner Ka: Not your ordinary game show

- Rachelle Marie Gutierrez Dangin -

It’s time to bid goodbye to the 12-year-old variety show “Sabado Na Gyud.” Today, October 27, ABS-CBN launches its “newest and biggest game show to hit the local scene.”

“Kapamilya, Winner Ka” airs simultaneously with similar versions of ABS-CBN Bacolod and Davao every Saturday mornings, from 10-11AM.

ABS-CBN Central Visayas Entertainment Head Donna Ocampo said, “This is the first regional game show that will air simultaneously with the other ABS-CBN local stations. Bacolod and Davao will have their own version of the game.”

“Kapamilya, Winner Ka” is a multi-regional qualifying game for national TV game shows like “1 VS. 100,” “Wowowee” and “Pilipinas, Game Ka Na Ba?”. Regional viewers now have a better opportunity to win prizes and join game shows in Manila.

The game starts with 50 players with their chosen balloons. Inside the balloons are numbers corresponding to the game board. At the signal of the hosts, the contestants are to pop the balloons and go to their respective numbers.

From there, the celebrity or guest player picks out a pattern—may it be in rows, columns or diagonals. Those chosen five contestants, whose numbers belong to the pattern, will be asked to answer a question. A pattern will only be complete once the five contestants have answered all questions correctly. One wrong answer means picking out another pattern.

Now, the five contestants will proceed to the third round where they will play for the jackpot prize.

Every week, should the player win the jackpot prize, he’ll go home with P10,000. During the monthly round, the player could win as much as P30,000.

Adrian Geonzon, the game show’s executive producer, said that there are two ways to join the game. One is via raffle through Knorr. Second is through text. You can text WINNER CEB name/age/gender/address and send it to 2366 for Globe, TM, Sun Cellular Subscribers and 231 for Smart, TalkNText and Addict Subscribers.

This weekly game show will be hosted by Roy Empleo, Christine Fernandez and Katrina Ros. Along with them is Cebu’s version of “Luningning”—Vanessa Durano.

For Christine Fernandez, who has been part of SNG, she said she missed hosting the former variety show. However, she saw this new game show as a sign of maturity. “With this game show, Cebu is opening doors to another opportunity—the chance for players to go to Manila.”

Also, “This is one way of showcasing the talents here in Cebu,” co-host Roy Empleo added.

Unlike Christine and Roy, who have done several hosting stints, Katrina Ros admitted that she feels nervous knowing that this is her first TV hosting job and that she never had a background on hosting before.

“Mo-try ko og level sa akong co-hosts. Mag-search ko sa youtube og mga pointers para maghost. What I need to improve now is my interviewing skills. Tabangan man pud ko nila unsaun pag-ask og questions sa contestants,” the Ms. Cebu 2007 first runner-up said.

If “Wowowee” has its Luningning, Cebu has its own version too – in the person of Vanessa Durano. After placing second runner up in the recent Search for the White Castle Girl, she now graces the dance floor every Saturday.

“Dili pa baya gyud ko maayo mosayaw pero karon nag-workshop ko para mas nindot gyud akong sayaw,” said Vanessa. True, this may be the biggest game show to hit local scene.

However, ABS-CBN Cebu Station Manager Tata Cinco-Sy said, “Right now, we’re working on our sponsors so that the players need not to go to Manila because even if they’ll just play here in Cebu, they can already win big prizes.”

From the painful farewell of SNG to the grand welcome of its newest game show, “Kapamilya, Winner Ka” is poised to be “not your ordinary game show.”
