Is Angelina Jolie putting up a 'mini-United Nations'?
March 18, 2007 | 12:00am
I'm convinced Angelina Jolie is planning to put up a mini-United Nations. Last week she was in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam to pick up a three-year-old Vietnamese boy she has adopted. The boy, originally named Pham Quang Sang, will be renamed Pax Thien, a combination of the Latin word for peace and the Vietnamese word for heaven.
Pax will join what the Angelina and husband Brad Pitt have called their 'rainbow family,' with five-year-old son Maddox, adopted from Cambodia, two-year-old daughter Zahara, from Ethiopia, and biological daughter Shiloh, born last May in Namibia.
'I have four children, and caring for them is the most important thing for me right now,' Angelina said in an interview with the Vietnamese press. 'I am proud and happy to be their mother.'
Pax spent his childhood in an orphanage and doesn't speak a word of English. Already, he has created a media stir, with photographers hounding him and Angelina in Ho Chi Minh City.
The actress has wanted to adopt children since she was young because they 'always need a warm shelter and a family.'
'I have the ability to realize their wish, so why not?' she said.
The entertainment industry is mourning the passing of one of its luminaries, Director Joey Gosiengfiao. He died of a heart attack at the Quirino Memorial Medical Center last Friday, a day after he celebrated his 64th birthday.
Among Gosiengfiao's early movies were Zoom Zoom Superman, Sunugin ang Samar, and Isang Gabi, Tatlong Babae which had 70s sexy star Alona Alegre in a major role.
He also had projects for Lily Monteverde of Regal Films. Among his best unforgettable works were Underage, Bata Pa si Sabel, Katorse, Bakit Ba Ganyan? Blue Jeans, Secrets of Pura, Bedspacers, Nympha, Exploitation, The Rape of Virginia P., and the classic Temptation Island.
We will miss you, Direk Joey.
It's either jail or rehab center for actor Niño Muhlach, who was arrested for possession of illegal drugs in a shopping center in Libis, Quezon City, last week.
The 35-year-old former child star was caught while buying 1.9 grams of shabu from an unidentified woman.
As of late last Friday Nino had yet to post bail, recommended at P200,000.
He could choose to spend time behind bars or volunteer for rehabilitation in a government-run treatment center. That could take from several months to two years.
Niño's film career has been in the skids lately, although he has been active in the political front. He supported the candidacy of Fernando Poe Jr. in 2004.
Kuh Ledesma and Regine Velasquez were a smash hit in their concert at the fashionable Esplanade in Singapore last week. In her email, Girlie Rodis, who brought the two over to Singapore for the one-night performance, says the venue was almost full despite the concert being held on a weekday. Girlie says Kuh and Regine combined beautifully, having performed together so many times before. The mostly Filipino audience was also impressed by the array of gowns put on by the two friends. Each of them had four costume changes. At one point Kuh showed off her gown like a ramp model at Regine's request.
My friend Christine Dayrit, chairman of the Cinema Evaluation Board, has combined her love for film and passion for traveling and come up with 'My Rendezvous, The Travel Line of Miladay.'
Christine, a cineaste and wanderlust, is also a jeweler. Her Rendezvous Line, to be launched on March 29, 5 p.m. at the Miladay store at the SM Mall of Asia, boasts of sparkling pieces of jewelry inspired by her many travels and her love for movies.
'Like the many places I've been to and the many movies I have seen, my Rendezvous Line is full of colors and feelings. I have always been in love with colors,' says Christine of her jewelry pieces that either come in big golden circles to symbolize the many beautiful places in the globe or bedecked in colorful gemstones to signify her love for life.
Particularly elegant is her Surabaya Collection, beautiful and colorful jewelry pieces that depict the allure and mysticism of East Java, Indonesia. 'Asia is very beautiful. Asian movies are also very cutting-edge, intelligently crafted,' says Christine, who also chairs the International Film Festival Committee.
She will lead the country's delegation to Hong Kong Filmart on March 19 to 24 made up of producers Viva Films, Regal, Star Cinema, MLR Films, Canary Films, Octo Arts and GMA Films. The Rendezvous Line launch is partly sponsored by the Surabaya Tourism Promotion Board and Sparkling Surabaya.
