A new action film maestro
November 2, 2006 | 12:00am
A World Wrestling Entertainment feature film, 'The Marine' also marks director John Bonito's debut leap onto the silver screen. Considered as one of the world's leading commercial directors, John Bonito is also known for his humorous, edge-of-your-seat, action-based spots which he also incorporated in 'THE MARINE.'
Q: From commercial spots, what became of your approach in "The Marine?"
A: "The WWE really wanted to put its mark on feature films. They made it clear: Let's go for the jugular with THE MARINE. I was excited to be a part of that."
Q: How many cars, trucks and sets have you blown up in this movie?
A: "Explosions? Let's just say that on set we had a running joke: If it's getting built, it's getting blown up. It is a fastball down the middle - a rock 'em, sock 'em action thriller."
Q: How was it working with John Cena and Robert Patrick?
A: "I was not familiar with John Cena's work as a wrestler, but after working with him on THE MARINE, I was very impressed with his work ethic - every day he came to play. He was a consummate professional. John Cena did many of his own stunts: He jumped cars, smashed into cars, jumped out of burning buildings. He was blown up, shot at, stabbed, punched and kicked. He also has a natural charisma; the camera loves him. Robert Patrick does a lot of serious, dramatic roles, but he has a great sense of humor, and that really comes across in the film."
John Bonito's "take-it-to-the-limit" attitude has garnered him numerous awards and given him the opportunity to helm some of the biggest action-sports campaigns, including the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, the mini-movie promo "Rumble In The House" for NBC, and image spots for General Electric and NASCAR. Bonito's work features a unique mix of action and comedy, as evidenced in the campaign for CNBC's "Squawk Box."
Bonito used the big screen to promote the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, creating a 1.5 minute James Bond-like trailer that aired in theaters across the United States. The promotional spot featured U.S. Olympic snowboarder Chris Klug fleeing (via snowboard) from legions of police cars, helicopters and snowmobiles after he's clocked for "speeding" down the slopes. Bonito's Arena Football League 2004 campaign, featuring Jon Bon Jovi and John Elway, recently swept the 2004 PROMAX/BDA awards, where Bonito won three Gold Awards for directing, editing and funniest promo. Bonito is also attached to direct the feature "Searching for Jordan."
THE MARINE is now showing in theaters nationwide from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros. 'GOOD MORNING BGY.ONSE!'in AY, ROBOT! at QTV RACQUEL's (Rochelle Pangilinan) father owns a small a.m. radio station and she, as the manager sets out to look for Douglas, whom Kat has referred to a friend of a friend of Racquel, to repair their radio equipment. Initially, Douglas hesitates knowing his insufficient knowledge of computer electronics. But Clinton forces him to take on the project and that it will all be very easy if Douglas brings Sam along.
And indeed they finish the repairs quickly. But an emergency arises. KUYA SAMSON (PALITO), the station's popular Ernie Baron-type announcer suffers a mild stroke in the middle of his show. And while Douglas and the station crew apply first aid on Kuya Samson and bring him to the hospital, Sam innocently takes over the announcer's job, expertly answering all the phone-in questions. Doug is flabbergasted when he hears Racquel excitedly report that Sam is a hit! He can never let Sam be exposed!
Meanwhile back at the Bocobo household, Clinton has a major problem. After volunteering to provide Beloy's benefit ballroom dance with the music of his record collection, he discovers that their old turntable is now broken down and irrepairable. Racquel, who has followed Douglas and Sam home in her desperate effort to convince Douglas to work, volunteers to Clinton their studio turntables, all radio broadcast quality. Sam returns with Doug's consent to the radio booth. And everything looked okay ever after. But Douglas discovers that because of Sam's successful radio stint, Racquel's father has fired out Kuya Samson.
