Snapshots of the Bakekang Launch
September 9, 2006 | 12:00am
GMA Network's newest primetime drama Bakekang, was recently launched to the members of the media last September 4 in a grand press conference that is reminiscent of an extravagant red carpet movie premiere the likes of which the show's lead character would aspire for and eventually achieve through her offspring. The first-ever TV serialization of the popular comics series premieres on GMA's primetime block on September 11, when the unusual face of an unlikely heroine will emerge to present a riveting story of an ugly woman's rise from a sorry state of ridicule to the pedestal of triumph and coveted fame.
Created by top-selling comics novelist and award-winning director Carlo J. Caparas, Bakekang is a comics classic serialized in Bondying Komiks which was made into a movie in 1978 with no less than Philippine showbusiness' superstar Nora Aunor portraying the title role. Now reprising the character of the ugly but feisty Bakekang is versatile young actress Sunshine Dizon.
Bakekang also stars Lovi Poe and Yasmien Kurdi, who will play Bakekang's daughters Kristal and Charming; Sheryl Cruz as Valeria, an actress who does everything to keep her boyfriend and leading man all to herself and away from Bakekang; Jay Manalo as Cristoph, the popular matinee star whom Bakekang idolizes and loves with all her heart; and Manilyn Reynes, Victor Neri, Gladys Reyes, Cogie Domingo, Julia Clarete, Vangie Labalan, Nadine Samonte, Dion Ignacio, Tyron Perez, Iwa Moto, Arci Muñoz, and Marky Cielo.
The members of the show's cast were presented to the members of the press in a grand production number, capped by a highly entertaining number from Sunshine garbed as a glamorized Bakekang, singing the catchy song "Movie Fan," escorted by her handsome leading man Jay Manalo. The show's talented and hardworking production team was also introduced to the press. The comics' creator, Carlo J. Caparas, and his wife, Donna Villa, gave a touching address at the beginning of the program.
GMA Network Senior Vice President for Entertainment Wilma Galvante also asked the members of the press to support the show and invite the viewers to watch the blockbuster primetime series which boasts of wonderful storytelling. Gearing away from the telefantasya trend, it showcases reality and the inspiring tale of a woman who has experienced nothing but mockery and hatred since childhood because of her ugly appearance but who refuses to wallow in self-pity and proves herself a strong-willed fighter.
Sunshine ended the program by thanking GMA Network for entrusting her with such a big and challenging role, and she promised the Network and everyone present that she will really give her best to the show and give justice to her role, hoping to make the already popular comics series even better in its TV version.
