SWU, C&E to launch book about Davide

Southwestern University through the Center for Information and Publication and C&E Publishing Inc. will launch the book of Dean Antonio R. Tupaz, of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines College of Law, entitled DAVIDE: An Unauthorized Biography. This will be launched on Friday, July 28, 2006, 3PM at the Aznar Memorial Coliseum, Southwestern University, Aznar Road, Cebu City.

The author, Antonio R. Tupaz is a lawyer, educator, legislator and speechwriter. He is a Visayan and a close friend of the former Chief Justice, who worked with the latter in different capacities. He is the dean of the College of Law of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) and former Law Dean of the University of the East.

According to Isagani M. Yambot, publisher of a national daily, Tupaz's biography of former Chief Justice Davide paints a vivid portrait of this very remarkable man. The book is not a thriller, but because it is hard to put down, especially if the reader is interested in recent history and contemporary affairs.

Yambot further wrote that the book of Tupaz is an outstanding work of scholarship, research and writing. It gives attention to detail - but detail that is not irrelevant or superfluous, but that is necessary to tell the inspiring story of one of the judicial legends of our time. Generally, the style is simple and easy, except in some parts where the author, probably carried away by his admiration for his subject, comes close to crossing over to the territory of ornate prose.

The Philippine STAR's Max Soliven in his foreword remarked, "in the pages of this interesting and fascinating book you will plumb the depths of the character of the real Davide, as capably and lovingly written by one of his foremost supporters and admirers, Dean Antonio R. Tupaz."

According to Dr. Rouel A. Longinos, Director for Information and Publication, the launching is also a homecoming of the former Chief Justice Davide being a former professor of SWU College of Law and an adopted alumnus. It is to be remembered that Davide was granted by SWU the degree Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa on March 22, 1999 in recognition of his remarkable performance, service and contribution to the field of Law, more particularly, in the legislative and judiciary branches of the government.

Longinos, added that this occasion will also serve as a send off affair for Davide being appointed as Permanent Ambassador to the United Nations.

The book is available during the launching and in all C&E Publishing outlets. Book aficionados, librarians and all Cebuanos are invited to attend the affair.
