Actor owes fab bod to steroids

SHOWBIZ DRIBBLE - Salve V. Asis -
I was surprised to find that there are many who doubt the results of the recent KBP Golden Dove awards.

"How can a noontime show win when it hasn't proven itself yet?" one irate showbiz insider told me. "The show never enjoyed good rating. And it offers false hopes to those who want to join its contests. They say they're holding out hope to the poor. I shudder at their temerity."

Makes me wonder what it takes nowadays to take home a Golden Dove trophy.

The insider goes on to question the criteria of the KBP in handing out the awards. Practically all the awards were won by ABS-CBN, so ratings definitely were not a factor. Ratings-wise, GMA-7 is the reigning topnotcher.

"I think it was a wise decision for GMA-7 not to participate in the Golden Dove awards," my source said.

She is not impressed with the virtual sweep of the Golden Dove awards by ABS-CBN. "I believe other award-giving bodies are more credible. There's no hanky panky there." o0o

Speaking of noontime shows, a group of regular female dancers has been cut from this particular show. It seems that the show's host had made a pass at one of the girls. The dancer was ready to tell all about the lascivious host but before she could the show's staff fired the entire group.

It's sad how some TV executives will go to great lengths to cover up for an abusive talent just to save a show. o0o

In the aftermath of the Rudy Fernandez-Robby Tarroza face-off, many celebrity personalities are avoiding a stint in Japan like the plague.

They are afraid of being humiliated by Japanese immigration authorities who obviously don't give a hoot if you are a big star back in the Philippines.

To recap, Daboy, Alma Moreno and several other performers were deported after Robby Tarroza notified the Japanese embassy in Manila that a member of the Viva Hotman, who was with the group, was not authorized by his agency to perform in Japan. After returning to Manila, Daboy went after Robby and roughed him up.

A couple of stars who are having second thoughts about performing in Japan are Martin Nievera and ex-wife Pops Fernandez. The two had been booked for a concert there. o0o

A certain young actor owes his fabulous muscles to steroids. No less than his personal trainor spilled the beans on him.

"It's steroids," the trainor, who is my friend, said. "That's why he bulked up that fast."

A lot of people did notice how the actor developed from scrawny to hulk in a matter of weeks. If acting were an Olympic event, he would have been disqualified! o0o

Ricky Lo, entertainment editor of the Philippine Star, has been nominated as Outstanding Showbiz-Oriented Program Host for GMA-7's "Showbiz Stripped."

Tito Ricky will be up against: Boy Abunda - "The Buzz" (ABS-CBN 2), Kris Aquino - "The Buzz" (ABS-CBN 2), Paolo Bediones - "S-Files" (GMA-7), Butch Francisco - "Startalk" (GMA-7), Toni Gonzaga - "ETK: Entertainment Konek" (ABS-CBN 2) and Lorna Tolentino "Startalk" (GMA-7).

In last week's episode of "Showbiz Stripped," Tito Ricky had Lipa Mayor Vilma Santos as guest. You've gotta hand it to Ate Vi, the Star of All Seasons. She survived her tax problems, a Betamax scandal, a break-up with Edu Manzano, a difficult pregnancy with Ryan Christian. She's a survivor for all seasons. o0o

Among the presents actress Bea Alonzo received for her debut last month were five copies of Dan Brown's bestseller, The Da Vinci Code.

But Bea confessed that although she is an avid book reader, she hasn't read a single page of The Da Vinci Code. She said the author doesn't have faith in anything.

A devout Catholic, Bea said she'll probably give away her copies of the book.

Her TV special, "Bea's Wildest Dreams at 18," was shown on ABS-CBN late last month. It was actually a travelogue with the actress buzzing all over Asia. o0o

Comedian-TV host Michael V has reportedly plunked down a quarter of a million bucks to start of a restaurant in Katipunan Avenue, Quezon City.

The place is named Bubble Gang Toppings, after his hilariously successful show on GMA-7, "Bubble Gang." o0o

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger may find himself challenged by a fellow actor in the next elections. Warren Beatty, another Hollywood icon, will appear on paid radio ads urging people to vote in a referendum on Nov. 8 against propositions advocated by Schwarzenegger.

"Schwarzenegger and his big money backers are counting on you to not get out and vote," Beatty said in a sample of the ad. "Don't give him more power… Let's stand up for our state."

Beatty, star of the classic gangster film, "Bonnie and Clyde," has chided the governor for failing to criticize President George W. Bush over the war in Iraq and the federal government's slow response to Hurricane Katrina.

Schwarzenegger has flicked off Beatty's tirade and his spokesman has called him "a crackpot."
