2nd skywalk soon at SRP
CEBU, Philippines — The second skywalk at the SRP is now fully approved, with Cebu Mayor Nestor Archival giving his nod and the City Council concurring this week.
Councilor Jaypee Labella, who sponsored the ordinance related to this project, emphasized its safety benefits for the thousands of employees and visitors at NUSTAR, especially following the recent tragic accident involving an elderly couple near Il Corso.
The pedestrian overpass along the Cebu South Coastal Road has been endorsed by the SRP Governing Board and formally approved by Mayor Archival. The City Council's concurrence now allows the DPWH Region VII to begin construction.
The project is funded under the Motor Vehicle User’s Charge (MVUC), with a ?98.5 million budget released last year for construction and improvements within SRP.
Once completed, the skywalk will be turned over to the Cebu City Government for maintenance.
Based on the detailed engineering design plan, the bridge will be 58.7 meters long, with a 2.8-meter-wide walkway, a vertical clearance of six meters, and an apex height of 12.91 meters. It will be constructed of steel and include roofing, storm drainage, electrical fixtures, a hybrid solar panel system, and two elevators to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities.
Labella stressed that the project is fully funded by DPWH. “This project is sponsored by DPWH and the budget is taken from them.”
He noted its impact, especially on workers of the Nustar complex. “It will mainly benefit the more than 5,000 employees in the area along with visitors.”
He also highlighted its accessibility. “With elevators, PWDs can also use it.” Aside from the PWD’s use Labella also underscored its safety value for the rest. “This is a big help, especially since we’ve had cases before where pedestrians crossed and met accidents.”
The urgency of the project was underscored by the fatal accident on February 14, 2026, when an elderly couple, Salvador and Cecilia Geraldizo, was struck by a delivery truck while attempting to cross the SRP near Il Corso and NUSTAR.
The tragedy reignited calls for safer pedestrian infrastructure, with Mayor Archival himself urging developers to expedite walkway projects to prevent further incidents.
The new overpass will be the second skywalk at SRP, following the first pedestrian bridge at Il Corso, developed within the City di Mare township.
That initial skywalk, partially opened in March 2026, connects directly to the Il Corso mall and operates daily from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. to provide a safer crossing for shoppers and commuters while finishing works continue.
NUSTAR has issued a letter confirming that the bridge will remain open for public use, except during maintenance or emergencies.
Robinsons Land Corporation has also expressed support, allowing a portion of its property to be used under a usufruct agreement.
With all approvals secured, DPWH is expected to begin construction soon.
