AI-powered forecasting tools to aid climate-smart farming

Ehda Dagooc - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines — Agrilever, a Philippine agritech firm focused on smallholder rice farmers, has partnered with global weather intelligence company Tomorrow.io  to roll out hyperlocal, AI-powered forecasting tools aimed at helping the farm sector manage climate risks and lift productivity.

The tie-up comes as the Philippines ranks among the world’s most climate-vulnerable countries.

GermanWatch’s Climate Risk Index ranks the country seventh worldwide for exposure to extreme weather over the past 30 years, highlighting growing pressure on agriculture from stronger and more frequent storms.

Under the partnership, Agrilever is integrating Tomorrow.io’s weather intelligence into platforms used by farmers and government agencies, delivering real-time forecasts on rainfall, wind speed and flood risks.

The data is designed to support faster response times, better asset protection and more informed decisions before and during severe weather events.

Agrilever has already deployed the system during recent typhoons, providing localized weather reports to the Department of Agriculture and the National Irrigation Administration, which were shared across affected agencies.

Tomorrow.io also tracked and analyzed several major storms this year, generating province-level intelligence for Luzon and the Visayas.

The technology has been embedded into key government systems. Through Agrilever’s platform, the National Food Authority now monitors weather risks across more than 300 warehouses nationwide, while the Bureau of Soils and Water Management receives automated reports for priority locations accessed by hundreds of users, many of them farmers relying on mobile devices.

Local governments have also begun using the forecasts for on-the-ground planning. In Madalag, Aklan, barangay officials shared localized rainfall and wind projections ahead of severe weather, allowing farmers to prepare before heavy rains and strong winds hit.

Agrilever President Ruel Amparo said the partnership strengthens efforts to protect farmers’ livelihoods as climate volatility intensifies.

“By integrating advanced, hyperlocal weather intelligence into our platform, we’re enabling farmers to prepare earlier, make faster decisions and reduce losses during extreme conditions,” Amparo said.

Agrilever’s digital platform combines weather intelligence with crop protocols and access to financing, aiming to give farmers a single decision-making tool.

As climate-adaptive technologies gain wider adoption, the company expects more resilient harvests, lower losses and improved long-term planning across vulnerable farming communities. — (FREEMAN)
