Philippines emerges as global digital powerhouse

Ehda M. Dagooc - The Freeman

The Philippines is tightening its grip as one of the world’s most digitally engaged markets, with 98 million internet users and nearly 96 million social media identities, according to the Digital 2026: Philippines report published by Meltwater and We Are Social.

Social media identities surged 10.3 percent from a year earlier, tracking near-universal smartphone penetration at 98.6 percent. The ubiquity of mobile access has embedded digital habits into daily life, from entertainment and communication to shopping and personal finance.

Filipinos now spend more than 20 hours a week watching online video—twice the time devoted to traditional television—fueling growth for global streamers such as Netflix, Disney+ and Prime Video.

Local content creators remain a dominant force, with music videos, comedic and viral clips, and influencer vlogs the country’s most consumed formats.

The trend underscores the market’s strong appetite for storytelling and community-driven content.

Digital commerce and financial services are also accelerating. More than half of consumers make at least one online purchase each week, generating about ?487.5 billion ($8.24 billion) in spending across electronics, food and fashion this year.

E-wallets including GCash and Maya now handle 39 percent of digital transactions, surpassing traditional card payments as Filipinos deepen their use of mobile finance.

The report shows 88.5 percent of Filipinos use online platforms for banking, investments or insurance every month—evidence of rising trust in digital finance and widening inclusion in a country where large segments remain outside the formal banking system.

“Filipinos have long been recognized as one of the most digitally active nations, and our 2026 data reaffirms that,” said Mimrah Mahmood, APAC vice president at Meltwater. “What stands out this year is how digital behavior has matured, moving beyond streaming and social engagement into e-commerce and digital finance.”

Globally, more than six billion people are now online, with over one billion using artificial intelligence (AI) tools each month.

The Philippines’ rapid shift from basic connectivity to digital empowerment—spanning communication, entertainment and commerce—signals a market increasingly defined by technology-driven opportunity and participation.
