CEBU, Philippines — The government of Austria is intensifying efforts to attract skilled professionals from the Philippines as it confronts persistent labor shortages across key sectors including healthcare, hospitality, engineering, and information technology.

Speaking during a recently held trade mission to Cebu, Arnulf Gressel, commercial counsellor at the Austrian Embassy’s Commercial Section, highlighted his country’s growing demand for foreign talent and its confidence in the Philippine labor system.

“The Philippines has a strong education and training infrastructure in place,” Gressel said in an interview.

“The system ensures both sides are protected—the qualifications are solid, and there’s reliability in the workforce,” he said.

The Austrian delegation held talks with executives of Magsaysay People Resources Corporation, along with its affiliates Magsaysay Global Services and the Magsaysay Center for Hospitality and Culinary Arts, as well as representatives from local business chambers and public sector officials.

While healthcare remains the dominant sector for recruitment, Gressel noted rising Austrian demand for Filipino professionals in tourism, metalworking, machinery, and IT.

“Austria offers a pathway to permanent residency.”

“It’s not just a short-term posting. Migrants can bring their families, settle, and build a future,” he added.

According to 2024 figures, Austria hosts over 5,000 Filipino nationals, predominantly employed in healthcare, food service, and hospitality.

The number of Filipino workers deployed to Austria rose by 127 percent in 2022, signaling growing bilateral labor ties.

Magsaysay People Resources president Marlon Rono said the company has already deployed more than 100 Filipino workers to Austria’s hospitality industry over the past year and is currently training 150 healthcare professionals for placement.

“The key hurdle is language acquisition,” Rono said, referring to the mandatory seven-month German training required for those in elder care roles.

“But Austria’s strong labor protections, competitive wages, and high quality of life make it one of the most attractive destinations for Filipino professionals in Europe,” Rono explained.

He added that Filipino workers continue to distinguish themselves internationally for their strong work ethic, compassion, education, and English fluency.

In light of Austria’s emergence as a key labor destination, the Philippine government has established Migrant Workers Offices to provide stronger support for the growing Filipino community in the country.
