Packaging firm taps Vivant to expand solar capacity

Treasure Island Industrial Corporation’s (TIIC) packaging division, iPak, has expanded the capacity of its rooftop solar plant by 729.3-kilowatt peak (kWp), covering approximately 11,000 square meters of roof space.

Located in Barangay Tingub, Mandaue City, TIIC is collaborating with Corenergy, a subsidiary of the Cebuano-owned firm Vivant Energy Corporation.

The additional solar generation capacity at iPak enables TIIC to prevent the emission of 527 metric tons of carbon dioxide annually, equivalent to what 12,100 trees can sequesteryearly.

iPak, which caters to both local and international markets, specializes in the manufacturing of flexible plastic packaging such as stand-up pouches, 3-side seal bags, cap seals, labels, PE bags, and collation shrink film.

The company also produces rigid plastic packaging such as microwaveable containers and thermoformed clamshells and trays.

In 2019, iPak completed the first phase of its rooftop solar project with the installation of a 1,345-kWp system, supplied by Corenergy. Combined with the newly energized phase 2, iPak’s built-in solar rooftop power plant already has a total generation capacity of 2,074 kWp, equivalent to about 35 percent of its energy demand.

“Today adds another milestone in the partnership between TIIC and Vivant Corenergy and we see more opportunities to grow together in our journey toward sustainability and cost-efficiency,” said TIIC Executive Vice President Douglas Ong during the recent ceremonial switch-on of iPak’s phase 2 Rooftop Solar Project.

According to Daniel Ong, TIIC President and chief executive officer (CEO), the company’s decision to tap renewable energy came with the recognition of its responsibility to the environment.

“We are very satisfied with our partnership with Corenergy because we can have a cheaper energy source and yet one that is clean and friendly to the environment,” Ong said

“Our partnership with iPak dates back to 2019 when we first supplied and installed solar panels on the rooftop of their manufacturing plant. This was our first solar project in Cebu and that makes our partnership with iPak very special to us at Corenergy.” said Mark Habana, Vivant Energy Vice President of Operations.

“We are honored that we are able to help iPak leverage solar energy to support their mission of becoming a value-driven company that generates sustainable growth and profitability,” Habana added.

Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes, represented by Vice Mayor Glenn Bercede commended iPak’s solar rooftop project during the event and emphasized that this project aligns with the local government’s efforts to move towards a more resilient future and it serves as an example for other businesses to follow.
