CEBU, Philippines —  At least 200 modern jeepneys, operated by Cebu People’s Multipurpose Cooperative (CPMC), are now accepting cashless payment options through RFID (radio frequency identification) or tap technology.

CPMC has partnered with digital payment firm Maya to deploy cards that can be used to pay fares within CPMC’s various routes like Cebu City, Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City, Naga City, Minglanilla, and Liloan.

“By merging cutting-edge cashless technology with a strong focus on passenger comfort, safety, and environmental sustainability, this initiative is redefining urban mobility in the city,” said CPMC president and chief executive officer Brian Yap during the formal launching of the partnership held at the Cebu IT Park, Garden Bloc.

According to Yap this initiative jumpstart’s CPMC’s goal to be a major implementer of Cebu’s public transportation system, as an early adopter of “forward-thinking urban transportation solutions.

Upon boarding a People’s Jeep, a passenger assistance officer will enter the trip details on the point-of-sale (POS) device. The passenger will verify the details and tap the card on the POS, generating a receipt for each successful transaction.

“We are thrilled about this groundbreaking initiative as it enhances the daily commute of Cebuanos and contributes significantly to the modernization of public transportation in the city. Moreover, it brings all-in-one digital banking to the hands of our commuting public, fostering greater financial adoption,” said Richarch Labitag, head of acceptance and SME for Maya.

The Maya PeoplesJeep card eliminates the need for cash transactions and reducing contact points.

To enhance convenience further, the GoodKredit App allows users to easily top up their

cards digitally and soon, directly within the Maya app.

“Offering commuters a hassle-free way to manage their Maya PeoplesJeep cards. As PeoplesJeep continues to expand its Automated Fare Collection System (AFCS) functionality, this initiative with CPMPC and Maya perfectly aligns with our common mission to enhance commuting for Cebuanos,” added  said Brezhnev Tero, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Information Officer of GoodKredit.

People’s Jeep passengers can avail of the Maya PeoplesJeep card  at the booths installed at the Cebu City  IT Park Terminal.
