Rekindle our nationalist, patriotic spirit

There is a need for us to understand our past and what our ancestors have accomplished for the future generations in this day and age, when information is abundant everywhere, international travel is frequent, and we share so much of what we have, including our culture and identity.

The music of the Philippines is heavily influenced by different musical cultures. The majority of the population in the nation enjoys the local music very much. The passions that erupt amid the ebb and flow of interests that fuel the nation's political and social consciousness are reflected in the music of the Filipino people. Filipino songwriters create music and songs that elicit and express nationalistic sentiments, which has allowed music to play a significant role in reawakening Filipino patriotism.

The importance of music in fostering national consciousness and reform can be traced back to the Spanish era, when it was a crucial component of the uprising against a foreign colonizer. This is especially true of the EDSA Revolution in the 1980s, when Filipino composers and bands used Filipino rock music with socially conscious lyrics as a means of communication among the populace during the ensuing uprising of that time.

More Filipinos had been motivated to pen songs and utilize them as a platform to denounce injustice, corruption, and poverty. The Filipino way of life now includes music.

The University of San Carlos Choristers, Chamber Orchestra and some alumni sang traditional nationalistic songs that were written and orchestrated by our renowned national artists for music on June 12, 2023 at the SM Cebu Northwing in their concert titled “Bayan Ko, Pilipinas Kong Mahal”. The official chorale of the University of San Carlos, USC Choristers, made up of college students enrolled in various academic areas, want to instill a love of the fine arts in the students by using their extensive repertoire of songs to foster cultural awareness. The group has frequently performed at various events as a method to showcase the specific abilities of the members and uphold the reputation of the university under the able tutelage of conductor and choir director Prof. Roberto Giron del Rosario.

Nationalistic songs are still relevant today due to their timeless sentiments and capacity to stir up patriotic zeal. When the message of patriotic songs like these is taken to heart, we hope that a spirit of optimism and patriotism will be lived.
