TESDA head: Ormoc manpower training needs support from LGU

ORMOC CITY, Philippines — Secretary Guiling “Gene” Mamondiong, secretary general of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) aired his observation on the deficiency of the Ormoc City Manpower Training and Research Center (MTRC), run by the local government, compared to another technical-vocational institution in a neighboring municipality.

Mamondiong told manpower personnel and guests, during his visit to Ormoc last Sunday, on the need to upgrade the manpower training facility. “Siyudad kayo (Ormoc), samantala yung Kananga ay munisipyo lang,” Mamondiong said referring to the more advance center of the latter.

While the secretary admired the successful collaboration between the government and the private sector in Kananga — as one of the factors in the success of the center there — he stressed the necessity to put more focus on building of dormitories, adding equipment rooms, improving working conditions, and targeting more beneficiaries of the Ormoc City-run MTRC.

Mamondiong, citing the fulfillment of President Rodrigo Duterte’s dream of preparing many Filipinos for decent and skilled jobs, called not only Mayor Richard Gomez for fund allocation but also Representative Lucy Torres Gomez (4th district, Leyte).

“Kausapin ninyo sila at handa ang TESDA na magbigay ng counterpart,” Mamondiong said while looking at Leody Abarca, chief of the city’s manpower facility.

The secretary later announced that a regional summit will be held in Ormoc this September. “National agencies will be invited so that the people can directly approach them personally,” he said.

TESDA Regional Director Andrew Bido told The Freeman that more emphasis should be put on the mission and vision of TESDA, as well as the global competitiveness of Filipinos in their respective field of expertise.

TESDA-Leyte’s Director Loreta Banario, for her part, said she was thankful for the cooperation of local government units in the province on TESDA’s advocacy. (FREEMAN)
