DA readies cloud seeding operations

Carlo S. Lorenciana - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines – With the intensifying El Niño, cloud seeding operations are ready in case water levels in dams particularly in Bohol province, which is the main production area in Central Visayas, reach a critical level, an official of the Department of Agriculture said.

DA Regional Director Angel Enriquez said Bohol dams are being monitored by the provincial government in coordination with the National Irrigation Administration.

The plane that may be used for cloud seeding is already put in place in Bohol for any emergency operation.

Cloud seeding — the dropping of crystals into the clouds to cause rain — is aimed to raise water level of irrigation facilities and dams when supply already becomes scarce.

Enriquez said the operation may be needed when no rain occurs in a place within two weeks, causing possible water scarcity.

The official added the agency is also looking into the possible drop in crop production due to El Niño.

She, however, noted that supply and prices of agricultural products are currently stable.

Earlier, the National Food Authority in Region 7 said it is expecting additional rice imports this month, in December and early next year as one of the preparations to counter the impact of El Niño on rice supply.

NFA-7 is to get a total of 1 million bags of rice by year end and 1.08 million bags from January to March next year.

The additional rice imports are part of the state's contingency supply to prevent the staple's possible scarcity due to the possible effect of the prolonged dry spell on rice production.

The developing strong El Niño which is affecting the Philippines and other economies is predicted to be the worst since the 1997-1998 event. El Niño last struck the Philippines in 1998 with as much intensity.

The country's weather agency has warned the weather phenomenon may intensify through the end of this year and well into next. (FREEMAN)
