Agripreneur ventures into organic food biz Grace

Melanie I. Lacamiento - The Freeman

CEBU, Philippines -  With the advocacy of the Filipino Cebuano Business Club, Inc. (FCBI) to promote organic farming, a chamber member ventures into organic food business and will open its first Cebu outlet situated at Vacinal Street North, Basak, Mandaue City today.

Tito Calooy Jr., brother of FCBI president Rey Calooy, aimed to concretize the organization’s campaign on natural way of farming and health and wellness, thus adding another venture into his usual business of distribution and production of institutional and consumer goods.

His new business named as “Sir Organico” sells organic chicken priced at P250 and pork liempo at P190 per 600-gram cut.

Calooy owns a one-hectare farm in Leyte that is planted with coconut and cassava.

He spent around P85 000 to P200,000 as an initial investment for his new enterprise.

With the Cebu market gradually becoming health-conscious nowadays, he said that commercially-raised chicken are not suitable with such demand.

Chicken that are organically-raised, on the other hand, are good for the health since they are fed with natural resources such as coconut, cassava and corn.

Aside from environment protection, he added that organic farming also contributes to the general welfare of farmers since entrepreneurs could buy from the former.

He further revealed that another local outlet will be opened in Basak, Lapu-Lapu City next week.

He also said that ginger tea, coco sugar, coco syrup and coffee will soon be added in Sir Organico’s product line within the next two months.

With his first organic business venture, Calooy then encouraged other businessmen and farmers to practice organic farming and promote health and wellness at the same time.  (FREEMAN)
