LED to become standard lighting in Phl in 3 years

- Grace Melanie L. Lacamiento - The Philippine Star

CEBU, Philippines -  “Whether we like it or not, LED will become a standard lighting.”

Greenworld LED Solutions Inc. President Francis Dy gave this statement during an interview with The Freeman, citing his bullish forecast that Light Emitting Diodes or shortly called as LED will become a trend to be practiced in all Filipino households and communities in less than three years.

Dy was one of the speakers during the 2nd Philippine Energy Efficiency Forum 2012 in Cebu held at Radisson Blu hotel last July 17 and his company served as one of the exhibitors during the Manufacturing Technology Cebu 2012 at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino last July 19-21.

In his presentation entitled “LED: A Green Light Program, Its Role to Sustainable Environment,” Dy said that with the climate change as the society’s critical issue at present, everybody is now inclined to green technology.

He added that it is proper to go green as a global initiative against global warming, carbon dioxide emissions, greenhouse gases, pollution, and toxic wastes.

Although the Department of Energy promoted the shift from incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent light bulbs for energy efficiency purposes, he cited that energy saving lamps such as CFL can cause environmental destruction due to its hazardous wastes and physical danger particularly on health problems.

He then recommended the use of LED lighting which he described as energy-efficient and environment-friendly.

LEDs are semiconductor devices which convert electricity to light but are free with UV radiation, no heat emission and have a lifetime of more than 50 000 hours.

Moreover, they feature a solid state light, quick light up, better lumen maintenance, longer lifespan, silent operation, good color rendering and ambient temperature.

“CFL is good. It is energy-efficient but not environment-friendly. LED is better as it serves both. When we say energy efficiency, it reduces the energy consumption without sacrificing the illumination. Energy conservation is different. LED provides higher efficiency without the sacrifice,” Dy stated.

He also considered that the education among Filipinos on green lighting is less than 10% by which his company initiates to participate in various exhibits and conducts seminars to further promote LED – lighting to the public.

Despite the less education, he added that the society’s acceptance once introduced to green lighting is gaining well with a double growth posted every year for the company.

Dy, however, noted that not all LEDs are the same as the public must consider the LED chip used, thermal management, warranty and technical support before purchasing LED fixtures.

He further said that there are still few players in such industry but added that the sustainability of the company lies on its good cause and not just focuses on the profit as its ultimate goal.

“We only sell and specialize on one product which is LED. We want to promote ourselves as a LED – company and not as a lighting company. We want to educate people to protect the environment,” he said.

He also noted that the consuming public has projected a wrong impression on the expense of using LED lighting since it is a long-term expenditure with savings as a consequence.

“If you want to go green because of climate change, there’s a corresponding premium. In our line of business, it will be a conscience by not using a LED,” he continued.

In the midst of the power crisis and other environmental concerns, he is positive that the government will soon mandate the use of LED materials which in turn could serve as building an “instant” power plant” for the country.

“We only have one environment. If we take care of the environment, the environment will take care of us. If we will not, catastrophes will strike,” Dy said.

Incorporated in February 18, 2008, Greenworld LED Solutions, Inc. is the distributor of high-quality indoor and outdoor LED Lightings, embedded with high-intensity LED chips achieving brightness, endurance and energy-savings in most general lighting applications.  (FREEMAN)
