Bridge repair

We went to Mactan early yesterday afternoon for two reasons – to pay for an item we reserved at the Shell station in Pusok and to personally see the traffic situation in relation to the closure of one lane of Marcelo Fernan Bridge for repairs.

On our way to Mactan, we noticed that the flow of vehicles crossing the bridge seemed a little light. Well, no wonder there were not too many passing that time as traffic was momentarily stalled as the crew cab of a TV station was trying to park in the cordoned area.

Okay, as somebody from media, we understand that we have to be at the scene to get a better picture of the situation. We also spent six years as a TV reporter so we know how it is.

One thing we must bear in mind, however, is that even if it is our job to report what is happening, we should not hamper the work of others while doing our job.

No doubt, the public look up to the people in media as citizens, who they regard highly.

We should also serve as good examples as another way of doing our share for our community to be a better place to live in.

One thing we also observed at the Marcelo Fernan Bridge is that there is a lack of signs that would help drivers queue up way before the area where they make a right turn to the bridge.

This way, there would be a smoother flow of traffic and the vehicles that would head straight, would not get caught in the jam.

It was good to see several policemen in the area and we hope that this would continue until the bridge repair would be done.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is one of the oldest departments, but it remains to be very poor in terms of planning. Why?

Well, why did they time the repair to start at the time classes would start? Maybe it was because they got the ire of Gov. Gwen Garcia for not informing her early on, which resulted to the delay. Why did they not think about that in the first place?

With the onset of the rainy season, the poor quality of work on our roads would again become obvious.

We hope that the contractors would be quick to repair the new layer of asphalt that would be washed away by the floods.

By the way, what has happened to the plans of the city to remove the silt from the rivers and canals?

We know that there are residents in some rivers, who would not budge, but how about those places that don’t have illegal settlers?
