Potholes on the highway

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiones -

After staying for a week in Davao City to cover the country’s biggest amateur team golf tournament, we’re very happy to be back home in Cebu.

No more having to ride the shuttle or taxi cabs to get from one place to another, no more having to deal with drivers, who have very little regard for the potholes and the humps, no more painful rides until the next time we again have to head to another place for an assignment.

Several readers have called our attention to the potholes on the south highway or N. Bacalso Ave.

One reader said that some of the potholes are very hard to see at night and they are huge potholes.

“Is the city going to fix them or is it DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways) since this is a national road,” asked one reader.

Not only N. Bacalso Ave. is littered with potholes as we see them in many other streets around the city.

Now that our local politicians are talking about the elections in 2013, can we also expect these roads to be repaired soon?

It is very unfortunate that in our country, the elections become the basis of government action. Well, it could also be the basis for inaction in places where the current leader lost in the last elections.

How can we move forward as a nation with such attitude of our leaders?

A reader asked us how come the Land Transportation Office (LTO) always doesn’t have the registration stickers available in January.

The reader has a vehicle that he registers every January and he has noticed that he is always told to come back some time February for the sticker.

“I don’t have a complaint about the procedure, it’s just the sticker,” he told us.

We told him we have experienced the same and it could be due to government procedures that the LTO can’t have the stickers ready on the first month of the year.

We are just speculating though, but the reader said that the agency can always prepare such in advance.

Next year, he hopes to get his car’s registration sticker when he renews it in January.

“Why not also have motorcycle lanes in Cebu?”

This was a question raised by a reader the other week.

The reason is probably the fact that we don’t have the roads that are as wide as EDSA and others in Manila where there are designated motorcycle lanes.

It would be good to see the motorcycle riders use only one lane though, which should lessen road accidents.

Many have complained about how those motorcycles, who weave in an out of traffic cause mishaps.
