Dangling wires and motorcycle lanes
Do motorcycle lanes really work?
Although this has not been tried religiously in Cebu, we believe this can work if we give it a try.
During a trip to Taipei a few years ago, I noticed that there are so many motorcycles there, but their presence on the streets seem to be well organized as they stick to one lane and don’t swerve in an out of the other lanes.
A few readers, who are not motorcycle drivers, support the idea of having motorcycle lanes in Cebu. Before we can do this, we need to clear up the roads first of obstructions especially those tents put up for wakes and fiestas.
Are our barangay and local government officials not aware of the inconvenience and the danger these tents pose? If so, then we wonder where their brains are.

A reader posted on the Motorists’ Corner page on www.facebook.com about a truck hauling a 20-foot container having trouble getting through Don Gil Garcia St. in Barangay Capitol Site and the van got snagged with the wires.
Isn’t there supposed to be a standard height for these wires?
Last week, we also noticed several wires dangling on the highway in Basak-Pardo near the USJ-R Basak Campus. In fact, we did not notice those wires and our vehicle got some scratches when we hit it by accident.
Later that day, we heard on radio that one of their technicians, who was on a motorcycle, also got snagged by the same wires and suffered injuries when his motorcycle crashed.
Once we called a utility company about dangling wires near our office, but we’re told that they could not ascertain if it is theirs unless a customer complains that he lost his service.
Where do we complain then?

We also received a complaint about a deputized agent, who seem to have failed to properly act when apprehending company vehicles that was ferrying VIPs to a dinner.
The complainant said that they are going to refer the matter to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) for action against the deputized agent.
This is not the first time we received reports about this group, but we are not naming anybody yet to give them the benefit of the doubt.
We have already informed one of their leaders about it and he promised to do something.
The spirit of volunteerism is good, but the volunteers must be careful not to step beyond the boundaries.

With many set to take long drives this weekend, we hope that you have made sure that your vehicles are fit to travel.
Bring them to a reputable mechanic or your car dealer for check-up. This could cost you some money, but it will also help saves lives including yours.
