Use the money to fix the roads

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiones -

During the heavy rain the other Sunday, we passed by the boundary of Talisay City and Minglanilla which easily gets flooded.

Traffic crawled in the area of Linao particularly at Corner San Miguel where the flood waters pour out into the highway.

While the vehicles had a hard time negotiating the road, we noticed several residents of the area who were frolicking on the floodwaters. Some were helping stranded motorists while many simply just caused more safety concerns as they were crossing the street with reckless abandon.

Luckily we haven’t heard of any untoward incident, but the barangay and city officials must make sure that they send people to the area to get those who should not be on the road off it during floods.

Even if traffic crawled, that is still a highway.

Several readers have complained about the poor condition of many roads around the city.

One reader said that the money that would be used to build flyovers should be spent on repairing the roads instead of building the multi-million structures that don’t seem to have been well planned.

The reader said that the P600 million intended to be used to build the two flyovers can already repair several kilometers of road properly that heavy rains would not easily wash off the asphalt.

It is good that there are now efforts to clean up the act of the habal-habal drivers in the Lahug area particularly in the corner going up to Nivel Hills.

A reader said that this is good and he hopes it will be sustained.

“Kahibalo man gud ta nga kining mga tawo mayo lang sa bag-o pa. Karon gani mayo lang kung naa ang mga otoridad, wan a gani, balik na pod.”

As in any effort to improve, there is a need to sustain until the people are used to it.

Many of our laws only look good on paper, but have never been properly implemented.

Take for example the anti-smoking law in public utility vehicles. We see many drivers and passengers smoking inside jeepneys and nobody is making them answer for it.
