The new Venice

Flooding seems to have become so regular the past few weeks due to the heavy rain.

 With flooding come all sorts of problems and concerns about our drainage system, which doesn't seem to get much attention from the authorities based on the budget allocated.

 If this continues, Cebu can be the next Venice. We'll be going around the city in bancas or gondolas and the Coast Guard will have more work as they also need to help control the flow of traffic.

 The downtown area, where our office is located, is one of the places that always go underwater during heavy downpour. The people are trying to cope, but it is such a pity to see how they try to do very tough maneuvers just to cross the street.

 In the Motorists' Corner page on www.facebook.com, one of the members said that once he sees the skies turn gray, he would stay home.

 Lucky are those who have such choice, but to many of us, we can only hope our local officials can do something about drainage instead of trying to destroy each other's political career.

 If the effort spent on bickering would be used to clean up the esteros and get funding for drainage projects, we'll have lesser headaches when the rain pours.

 The overloaded vehicles on our highways may not shock many anymore, but they are still accidents waiting to happen.

 We see these vehicles not only on the mountain barangays but also in the highways where there are supposedly many policemen and traffic law enforcers present.

 What surprises many is that these people in authority continue to turn a blind eye on such practice of overloading and instead focus their efforts on less serious concerns like the vehicles, whose plate numbers have not yet been released.

 Where are your priorities?

 Are the people tasked to implement traffic laws really up to the task?

 We are asking this question as a female reader has once again brought up the matter on the restriction code of her driver's license.

 She said that another enforcer has told her that she needs a restriction code of 4 as she is driving a vehicle with automatic transmission. Her license has a restriction code of 1 and 2.

 We have already asked Alita Pulga, our good friend from LTO about this and she told us that a restriction code of 4 is not anymore needed if you have 2.

 So, what are these enforcers doing then? What worries many motorists is that those who are tasked to implement the laws might also be ignorant about them.
