MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiones -

The start of classes has affected the flow of traffic, but it seems that we see many guys in blue shirts on the roads helping direct the flow of vehicles.

Even if we put thousands of traffic enforcers on our streets, it would not really speed up the flow of traffic since the volume of vehicles is the cause for such.

We noticed in Hong Kong, during a recent trip, that even on very narrow streets, traffic flows smoothly due to the discipline of the people and drivers.

We can do that here, but then our politicians would be met by a lot of rallies, lawsuits, and what more from the sidewalk vendors, trisikad and habal-habal drivers, and the usual bunch of so-called pro-people or cause-oriented groups, who jump into anything that they could get their hands on so that they get media attention.

It has been some time since we’ve heard from the reader, who calls himself Concerned Cebuano.

Here is what he sent last week:

A very interesting story which explains why there will never be order nor discipline on our streets. Yesterday, June 8, I happened to pass by the CITOM office at N. Bacalso Ave. around maybe 2:30PM, I’m not sure but around that time.

By the gate of CITOM, right IN FRONT of a No Stopping sign was a CITOM truck parked and behind it there were about 6 to 8 CITOM enforcers standing by the gate along with some bystanders. Barricading the entrance was a sign that said NO ENTRY – CITOM MEETING GOING ON.

This somehow simple scene tells us that if CITOM enforcers can’t even apprehend or at the very least if they are that lazy, tell the driver of that CITOM truck not to park there, we will be driving in chaos for a very long time.

Kana naa pa ilang mga agawon sa sulod ga meeting ha!!!

We have observed how the traffic enforcers seem to turn a blind eye on violations and it really disappoints the citizens to see such laziness.

What angers many is also when these people seem to focus their efforts on less serious problems rather than the major ones.

A reader complained to us about the blatant disregard of the anti-smoking law inside public utility vehicles.

She told us about a couple of incidents where the people, who violated the law were the ones, who tried to scare the law abiding citizens.

This seems to be another of those laws that were made for a good purpose, but haven’t been properly implemented.
