MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiones -

Cagayan de Oro City – We had a very long trip last Sunday starting from Baguio City in the Province of Benguet to this City of Golden Friendships.

We left Baguio at past midnight taking the bus to Manila to catch a morning flight to Cebu. After unpacking from the previous trip, we hurriedly packed for the next one and made it here late Sunday afternoon.

Whew!

We don’t intend to do it again, because no matter how many hours of sleep you seem to have, it’s different when you are lying down on the bed and not on a bus or a plane.

It seems that each time we head to Baguio, touted as the country’s Summer Capital, things are becoming bad in terms of traffic.

Last weekend, we were told that there were many conferences and conventions being held there that coincided with the annual alumni homecoming of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

Even traffic inside the PMA or Fort del Pilar was bad due to the volume of vehicles that were coming in last Saturday morning.

It is always a traffic nightmare when you try to fit in too many vehicles in one place at the same time.

Baguio is no stranger to having many guests, but we believe it is about time, something will be done to lessen the number of vehicles on its roads or it will forever lose its appeal to the visitors.

This goes for all places including our very own Cebu, which is slowly having traffic congestion as bad as that of Manila.

The traffic authorities like CITOM say something is being done, but honestly, even if we have very close friends in that traffic body, we feel that what is being done is not enough.

Last week, we received email from a reader in relation to our topic of motorcycles going against the flow of traffic.

The reader, who asked that he remain anonymous, said that an accident has indeed happened where a motorcycle going against the flow of traffic has collided with a vehicle, which happened to belong to the company of the reader.

We were also told that the driver of motorcycle did not have a license. Well, it is not a surprise to learn this as we personally know many drivers, including those of motorcycles for hire, are not licensed drivers.

Our authorities continue to treat this with kid gloves obviously afraid of losing votes. Let us remember these leaders come election time as those who would rather sacrifice the safety of the general public over the few votes that they would get in the polls.

We get the officials we deserve if we are not vigilant enough.
