Cebu Chamber grabs international award

C&C VIEWS - Ed F. Limtingco -

After being hailed as the Best Local Chamber in the Confederation of Asia-Pacific Chambers of Commerce and Industry (CACCI) in 2008, Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) is again recognized by another prestigious organization in Los Angeles, California, USA.

CCCI’s Cebu Business Month (CBM) was identified as the overall recipient of the 2010 Associations Make a Better World Award, sponsored by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) & The Center for Association Leadership under the “Developing Nation Category”. The award recognizes association programs, projects and activities that make significant contribution to society and economies around the world.

ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership, is the membership organization and voice of the association profession, founded in 1920. The organization provides a wide variety of knowledge resources, learning experiences, and other tools and resources to help members of the association community grow and maximize their performance.  Its membership is a diverse mix of association CEOs and professional staff as well as industry partners and consultants.

Founded in 1913, CCCI evolved from an organization concerned with port activities to that of becoming the premier voice of Cebu ’s businesses. Eventually in 1991, the organization launched the “Cebu Business Week” to give tribute to businessmen who vigorously pursued its existence over the years. Seeing its effectiveness in promoting Cebu as an investment destination, the celebration expanded its activities from dialogues, symposia, and seminars to the Techno Trade Fair, Industrial Fair, and the launching of new programs and projects. Since then, local and international recognitions were gained namely, Most Outstanding Chamber in the Philippines in 1995, 1996, 2005 by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and became Hall of Fame Awardee in 1997, Most Outstanding Chamber in the Visayas in 2005 - 2007, Most Outstanding Chamber in the Philippines 2005 – 2007 and became Hall of Fame Awardee 2007, Engine for Cebu’s Economic Growth in 2000 and Outstanding Institution in 2007 both conferred by the Cebu City Government, Finalist of the 4th World Chamber Awards for Best Chamber Management Project in Durban, South Africa with its CBM 2004 entry, Best Local Chamber in Asia Pacific in 2008, and the PERLAS Awards as a Valuable Institution in 2009.

CCCI Officers and Cebuano businessmen then took the move of making the celebration more extensive thus pushing to make it to a month-long event. In 1996 which was the diamond anniversary of CCCI, President Fidel V. Ramos signed the Proclamation No. 748 dated February 21 declaring the event to be celebrated in the whole month of June, thus it is now known as the Cebu Business Month (CBM).

Representatives from each of the overall award-winning associations will receive the Award at ASAE & The Center’s 2010 Annual Meeting & Exposition, Aug. 21-24 in Los Angeles, USA. Dr. Milagros C. Espina will represent the Chamber and will receive the award. She will be accompanied by another CBM Stalwart, CCCI Trustee Tess Chan.
