DTI expects more municipalities to join OTOP program
CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Trade and Industry is in high spirits that more municipalities would be encouraged to join in and develop their respective products through the One Town One Product program.
DTI-7 program management division chief Elias Tecson shared to The Freeman that they are looking forward on how to strengthen the program within this year and to gather more participants so that more residents would be alleviated from poverty and be given livelihood.
This will likewise help the municipality earn its mark on the Philippine map for its products and having its own identity, which has been proven in the previous years since the OTOP program was successfully launched and implemented by the department.
Tecson said that for the recent OTOP fair in Cebu which was participated by numerous entrepreneurs in the region, there was positive feedback from the business owners, the customers, as well as prospect participants who have extended their interest in participating in the program.
According to Tecson, the Visayas OTOP fair, which was held last November 18 to 22 at SM city Cebu, had a very good turnout. Although it did not exceed the target of the office to double the sales from last year’s P26 million, Tecson said that it still amounted to high sales for the participants.
Tecson said that they vow to continue helping the different provinces in promoting their products as it gives a lot of benefits to the public. The program has also helped the Philippines promote the locally-made products to the global market such as bags, souvenir items, gift items, processed food and accessories, among others.
Tecson said that they hope that with the successful stories of the municipalities and provinces that were able to see the positive effect of the program, more would be inspired to join in. — AJ de la Torre
