Online job portal notes hiring upsurge in Cebu

- AJ de la Torre -

CEBU, Philippines - With reports that companies had been hiring back employees with the effects of the global economic crisis now starting to wane, Mynimo.com, an internet job-bulletin-board for Cebu based jobs has also noted an improvement in the past few months with regards to companies hiring for various positions.

Wesley Chiongbian, the creator and president of Mynimo said that though they were affected with the crisis as companies were laying off workers while some chose to freeze their hiring, they had seen an increase of up to 40 percent in October compared to the same month last year.

Chiongbian said that last month was their best month posting the highest number of jobs in their site.

According to Chiongbian, this came as a surprise to him since due to the report of the crisis, they were gearing up for a continuous slowdown in the coming months but he said that it seems that the industries in Cebu are already slowly showing signs of recovery.

Chiongbian said that the increase in jobs posted come from different sectors but it is on the emerging Business Process Outsourcing industry in Cebu that most of the jobs are posted.

He said that new players in the BPO industry have been posting a lot of vacancies so far as well as the manufacturing industry who was reported to be one of the most affected sectors during the crisis due to the slowdown in demand of import and export products.

Chiongbian said that this is good news for the whole community with a lot of jobs vacant and available where the posted jobs opportunities in Mynimo.com for October has even surpassed the January to February records of the company which Chiongbian said is usually the most number of jobs are posted.

He also said that aside from the fresh graduates that have been applying so far, a bulk of the applicants are also those that have jobs but are looking for vacancies that are connected to their courses or skills.

Chiongbian said that the “mismatch” of jobs and the employees is still huge but lately they have noted that a lot of existing workers who are looking for other jobs that are related to the courses they had in college or those that they are aware of.
