Asphalt storm

Rains equal potholes. Potholes mean we got bad roads. Bad roads mean inconvenience. And the inconvenience of the public means an unhappy electorate.

We don’t have to continue what comes next as the 2010 elections nears. We now see many politicians renewing their promises but unfortunately we don’t see too many fulfilling such.

If you drive around Metro Cebu these days, there are just too many potholes to make it a smooth drive or ride. 

Over radio station dySS yesterday morning, during the show of Super Bobby Nalzaro, the “Asphalt Storm” project of Cebu City was mentioned. The listeners were asking where it is now.

The project was initiated by Mayor Tomas Osmeña back in the early 1990s to improve the quality of the roads in the city.

This has been done many times over the years, but with the sorry state of many roads, the residents are now asking for it.

Maybe the nearby cities can also do the same. If the Mandaue City officials would only pass Canduman road, they’ll see the need for better drainage and a better road.

The place is in such a sad state and this has been worsened by the rain.

During a weekend get away to Baguio City, we were very disappointed to see how the summer capital of the Philippines seems to be becoming also a traffic jam capital.

Most drivers agree that there are just too many vehicles in Baguio that the smell of the air is now different. No more smell of pines in the city center only that of exhaust fumes.

We were also told by a taxi driver that there are five times more taxi units that don’t have a franchise compared to the legitimate ones.

This is one reason why suddenly you don’t see any taxi when the authorities hold operations to apprehend violators.

It remains a wonderful place to go to though.

A reader called our attention once again to the defective traffic lights in many areas around the city that seems to “take a very long time to fix,” he said.

“I’m sure there is a budget for the repair, but how do we complain so that the authorities would know,” he asked.

We told him to try calling CITOM maybe the agency can help at least by reporting to whoever is in charge of the lights to have the repair done.
