Peace and order

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiones -

After a week in Davao we’re glad to be back home even if fuel prices here are much higher.

We still can’t understand the huge difference in the prices of fuel of Cebu and Davao, but it adds another good thing about that city, which we love after golf, good food, and peace and order although not necessarily in that order.

We continue to wonder how come the CITOM hasn’t seen the situation in corner Aboitiz and Juana Osmeña where drivers are not allowed to make a left turn at certain hours of the day.

While we understand that left turning vehicles would really stall traffic, the CITOM allows vehicles to go inside Sideline, which stalls traffic worse than those that make a left turn.

All the traffic authorities have to do is observe the situation, but they keep on turning a blind eye on this problem area.

A reader is asking about traffic signs that have been put up in the small roads, which don’t experience a heavy flow of vehicles.

He said that these signs could just be a waste of money since they are disregarded by peoaple.

He, however, added that at times these are also used as some sort of trap by CITOM which apprehends those that violate the traffic laws especially the NO PARKING signs.

So, they’re useless but still useful, but then we wonder how come the CITOM would rather do their job in these areas than in the busy streets?

A reader told us about the snatchers that lurk in the Lorega-San Miguel area prying on the passengers of jeepneys.

She said that on her way downtown yesterday, one of the passengers of the jeepney she was riding lost her necklace.

The snatchers reportedly fled towards the interior portion of the barangay and nobody even gave a chase.

What are the police doing about this? Cebu City is a great place but we must all help to ensure that the peace and order situation is maintained.

Since we are in the subject of peace and order, many readers have called us to complain about the problem areas where the vehicles are stalled because of jeepneys that are picking up passengers.

There are also reports of “dispatchers” that are illegal, but continue to ply their trade forcing drivers to stop in these areas and also forcing them to give money.

Maybe our police should send out more foot patrols to these areas, which we’re sure they know about, unless they go around the city without looking around.
