Lacion's terrible highway

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiones -

We had an interesting conversation with the taxi driver, who brought us to the town of Liloan yesterday from Mandaue City. It was about the sad state of the road in Consolacion that has become the traffic bottleneck of the north.

We have received so many calls from readers about the situation in Consolacion and we also get to pass the place several times when we head to Liloan.

The driver told us about a joke he heard on radio. He said that the announcer mentioned that if you own a lot of carabaos, head to Consolacion since there are lots of watering holes there right in the middle of the road.

The driver, who was also quite talkative told us that he enjoys playing the game of sungka, but not driving in that place where there are so many potholes that he has to avoid.

Mayor Avel Gungob must have understood by now that the billboards they set up to tell the people that it is not Consolacion’s responsibility to fix that national road is not working to improve the situation.

We also saw lots of uniformed traffic enforcers in the Cansaga area yesterday, but they were not helping direct the flow of traffic, but apprehending motorcycle drivers for all sorts of violations.

The motorcycle riders have been up in arms lately against the new policy of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) regulating those operating two-wheeled vehicles.

We understand their concerns about such regulations that seemed to be asking too much including mandating the prescribed attire for motorcycle drivers.

It’s good that the LTO budged and have settled for just making sure that the people riding motorcycles wear the prescribed helmet and not just those hard hats for construction workers or worse old balls that have been cut in half.

The move of the LTO irked many people and we believe that if the agency really wants to do something, it can start with the issuing licenses only to those who are qualified to drive.

We don’t really care much if the motorcycle riders use a helmet or not. It’s their head that’s going to crack if they hit the road, but we’d like to ask the LTO and the traffic authorities to discipline the drivers, who don’t follow traffic laws.

Start with those who pass the opposite lane without regard for oncoming traffic.
