LPG conversion

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

After another round of fuel price hikes over the weekend, prices of gasoline have breached the P60 level and further increases are expected.

Many have already changed their lifestyles to cope with the steadily increasing prices of fuel while others have decided to modify their vehicles to cut down on cost.

More than a year ago, we wrote a lot of articles about the use of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) on vehicles, which cuts the cost of fuel by almost half and we believe that it’s about time that we seriously consider this option if you haven’t done it yet.

We do know of some friends, who have converted their gas guzzlers into environment-friendly vehicles powered by LPG.  It does not only save them a lot of money, it also helps the campaign for cleaner emissions.

Although there have been a lot of negative information about the use of LPG most specially after that gas explosion in Mandaue City that resulted to some deaths, the use of such fuel in already widespread in many countries around the world.

In fact, the concern about LPG depots in the city is something that we find quite amusing considering that during a recent trip to Malaysia we saw how a depot for LPG was located just a few blocks away from the world-famous Petronas twin towers.

The key to safety is proper government regulation and serious monitoring of the compliance of these depots to the safety standards.

No sane businessman would compromise safety just to earn more money, because any accident will mean losses for his business if not his life.

If you want to convert to LPG, you can go to outlets of First Autogas or PTT and inquire how this can be done.

Our good friend Hector Almario was actually the one who introduced us to the concept of the use of LPG to fuel vehicles although we have long heard about this.

Hector’s insights into this technology, which is already used extensively in Japan, England and many other First World countries, made us realize that this is the way to go for us Filipinos.

There are some concerns about the environment most especially because the emission from vehicles running on LPG, smell different from the ones using gasoline or diesel.  This is not really a concern according to experts.  In fact the emissions from LPG are cleaner.

The worry about explosion brought about by leaks can be easily addressed as you can just open your car’s windows and let the escaped gas dissipate.

There are now many gas stations selling LPG so you won’t have a problem filling up.

By the way, we mentioned this a long time ago, but it’s worth mentioning again, even Queen Elizabeth II has a car that runs on LPG.

Just like any vehicle the key here is proper maintenance.  Make sure you take care of your car so it will perform at its optimum.

You might be wondering if we drive a vehicle that runs on LPG.  Not yet because our vehicle run on diesel, which can’t be converted to run on LPG.

If you really want to know more about LPG, try using Google to search for websites that can give you more information about this technology.
