Scared enforcers?

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

Several readers reacted to the item on the beauty pageant during the fiesta in Basak-Pardo, Cebu City that put many people in a very dangerous situation.

One reader also commented that the area is also where garbage inside bags or sacks fall off from the open dump trucks and the overloaded compactor trucks on their way to the Inayawan dumpsite.

“We’re not just dealing with road hazards here, but also health hazards,” he said.

Here is one of the many mail we received last week coming from somebody who calls himself “Concerned Cebuano.”

Hi Nimrod, It's been a long time since I communicated with you. This concerns about the newly reopened J Solon Drive (near Parklane), the one that was closed due to that building construction across Parklane. Now that it is passable already, I hope the authorities will really clean it up well. Whole day, vehicles are parked there, there is that red Multicab which is parked there every single day even while that road was closed. Siyaro ang CITOM wa ka bantay ani? You could see this particular vehicle when you go through the overpass. Now that it's open, it's worst because even trucks for the construction park there. How about those pungko2x by the sidewalk?

How come they did not include these in the clean up? Not only are they an eyesore, they're a health hazard too. Also those pungko2x on Salinas Dr. particularly by the entrance of JY Square, corner of Salinas and Wilson going to Camp Lapu-Lapu and by DPWH (near Waterfront). There's also that Sari2x  store on Gorordo near the entrance to Perpetual which has a makeshift awning which extends to the whole length of the sidewalk infront forcing people either to duck or detour to the street. Hay intawon ning CITOM og City Hall nato, WA JUD!

Michael Mercado of Lahug sent this email last week.  Let’s hear him out even if the matter is a bit late, because this can still serve as a wake up call to those who organize these events and most especially those who approve the road closures.

ANOTHER DRAG RACE THIS WEEKEND! When will these organizers ever learn! Another horrendous traffic awaits all of us and this time it will be at the Mandaue City reclamation area. Guess I have to agree with the comment in your column a few months back on why this group can't find a suitable place where they can do their drag racing without giving inconvenience to the public. Remember the outcry when they last held it at the SRP!

We continue to wonder who this regular correspondent is, but he’s got a point to raise again that we’d like to share with you.  Bisdak Kunuhay wrote:

Now you yourself have witnessed the abuses of the jeepney drivers that park along the Asilo dela Milagrosa church. You may not have noticed this but these are the very same drivers that continue that very kind of abuse as they also use the corner of the Banawa-V.Rama intersection to stop and pick up passengers for Labangon.

It has been a great regret for Citom & LTFRB to approve the opening of that jeepney route considering that the drivers that use this route seem to think that they're driving in the province or in town where they can just park where they want.

Allow me to correct you on calling the attention of Citom on this. There are Citom Enforcers but normally after 8 a.m. and the traffic has already built up. They're there but they're afraid of the jeepney drivers. It sounds really fishy but these enforcers were not afraid in the past to apprehend jeepneys from Mandaue entering Cebu City before but they're afraid of these Labangon-Ayala jeepneys.

Do you mean to say sir we have CITOM enforcers who are scared to do their jobs?

That’s so sad to hear because we feel this is really true.  Look at all those jeepneys that use the corner of Jakosalem and Colon streets as terminal, the enforcers don’t seem to know how to keep them moving.
