Pungko-Pungko and traffic safety

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod N L Quiñones -

There are two diggings in Linao, Minglanilla that pose a major danger to motorists because they are unlighted.

We learned from sources that these two diggings, which are a few meters apart from each other, are being undertaken by Helpmate Inc., which supplies water to an area in Minglanilla town.

There are no early warning devices that have been put up also and at night, these diggings are invisible until you are meters away from them.

Would we wait for an accident to happen before anything will be done?

Pinky Sy, the reader who sent us email last week, sent us another one pointing at the hazards posed by these “pungko-pungko” vendors that have proliferated along Salinas Drive in Lahug.

While the vendors are on the sidewalks, their customers, mostly taxi drivers park their units on the side of the road.

This is not only the area where taxi drivers seem to disregard traffic laws and road safety.

To name other places, there are also Gen. Maxilom Ave., Juana Osmeña St., and even corner Elizabeth Pond and Osmeña Blvd.

We’d like to call CITOM to do something.

Another reader 123Bisdak Kunuhay has some questions about the road widening project at N. Escario.

Here is what he sent us:

Dear Nimrod,

I have a very simple question to ask. Last year, they closed the N. Escario Ext. because of a road widening project. They took out the sidewalk and re-paved the road with concrete.

Now, they installed cement blocks simulating once again a barrier similar to a sidewalk again. Why this? The road is back to its original state due to the cement blocks laid out on both sides of the road.

We had to edit some parts because they might get us into trouble with libel laws, but our email sender’s concern is shared by many others.  What is happening here?

Can the DPWH explain?  How about our city officials?

A motorist pointed out to us that small island at the junction of P. del Rosario Extension and V. Rama Ave., which poses a danger to motorists.

The motorist, who called us up said that he passed the area shortly after a Toyota Tamaraw turned turtle after hitting the small concrete structure, which is unlighted.

Where are the reflectors?  He asked us.
