Food stalls on the street

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod NL Quiñones -

We received several complaints from readers about food stalls that encroach on the road.

One reader told us about a barbecue vendor near corner Junquera and Landon Sts. that sets up tables on the road in the evenings.

Another complained to us about a food vendor at Llorente St. right where vehicles coming from J. Osmeña make a right turn on a blind corner that has set up a table also on the road.

We brought these up with Councilor Jack Jakosalem and he said that this is under the jurisdiction of the CITOM and not the demolition team.

We hope something can be done about these dangers on the road.  Maybe the vendors can just set up their tables on the sidewalk instead of the road where they put themselves and their customers in real danger.

A mother and her two children complained to us about being harassed by a taxi driver while they were on their way home last Sunday afternoon from a mall.

The mother told us that the driver complained about the distance to their destination, which was Minglanilla and demanded that he be paid extra.

She said yes she was willing to give, which is her usual practice in consideration of the drivers, but the attitude of the driver was just too much to take for her.

Not wanting to have her afternoon further ruined, she decided to get off the taxi with her kids, who now have to deal with the rain also.

It’s a good thing that she kept the slip of paper given to her at the mall before she took the taxi.

A formal complaint will be made, but we’d like the Land Transportation Office and the mall management to act on this.

The Namie taxi bore the plate number GWW588.  The incident happened at past 4 p.m.

One thing that makes us proud about Cebu is the fact that our taxi drivers here are very courteous compared to their counterparts in Manila.  It is just unfortunate that there are a few bad eggs, who always claim that they are just trying to earn a living by harassing passengers.

The good still outnumber the bad, but then if we don’t do anything about the bad taxi drivers they will also destroy the reputation of the good ones.

Several residents of Minglanilla called us up to complain about the situation in corner Tungkil that has become a traffic bottleneck.

They said that the municipal government does not seem to care about the problem, because they don’t see any form of authority there.

There are vehicles parked very near the intersection that contribute a lot to the congestion and there are also many tricycles parked on the narrow road impeding the flow of traffic.

What can the Minglanilla town officials do about this?
