Sidewalk and road obstructions

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod Quiñones -

When the sidewalks are obstructed, the flow of traffic is affected because pedestrians, who should be using the sidewalk, will now have to walk on the road where the vehicles are.

Those who encroach on the road are even worse and nobody seems to be doing anything about it.

The most obvious are those wakes in the small kapilyas all over Cebu where they set up tents and chairs on the road putting the people going to the wakes, unfortunately often to gamble, in a major risk.

Then there are the fiesta celebrations where roads or part of it are closed to accommodate makeshift stages or for the discoral all in the guise of entertainment to keep the youth away from drugs.  Why don’t you do your activities much earlier and the youth home early in the evening to keep them away from harm’s way?

How about the perennial problem in Pardo, which is just outside the Pardo Police Station where jeepneys picking up or waiting for passengers block the entire city-bound lane?  The Pardo Police should know this because it is right in their very noses, but they haven’t done anything.

How about many other cases of traffic violations that the authorities are not doing anything about?  It really is heartbreaking to note all of these, but then these are also what keep us going in our crusade for better streets to use for all of us.

Since we are in the topic of violations, we’d like to share with you this email from Bisdak Kunuhay:

A simple problem Citom cannot address is the Ayala-Labangon Jeepneys that block the lane where the gate of the Asilo de la Milagrosa Church is. These Ayala-Labangon jeepneys are the most popular in using the side of the road as a loading area for passengers bound for the Escario to Labangon route. Try honking your horn to pass through, you might even end up being the one who's wrong. These jeepneys will easily wait for 2 intervals of the traffic lights till they can get a sizeable number of passengers before they decide to move forward.

This is my example of how powerless & inutile Citom is. They're scared of these drivers plying this route...

This is where I hope our vigilantes target the next...."CEBU's ABUSIVE JEEPNEY DRIVERS..."

A reader sent us this text message, which we believe is really what is happening: “Traffic signs in Cebu are just a suggestion, very expensive suggestions.”

Another had this to say, “what is wrong with our traffic signal system?  Daghan intersection nga nay missing lights.”

There really are so many problems and unless something is being done about them everyday, we can expect the situation to get even worse.  Just like the terrible traffic at Juana Osmeña late Saturday night.  What is CITOM doing about this?
