Problem areas at Gen. Maxilom and Juana Osmeña

MOTORIST’S CORNER - Nimrod Quiñones -

We wonder if our city officials who are known to go out at night to check what is going on around the city have passed Gen. Maxilom Ave. and Juana Osmeña st. recently.

The reason why we are asking this is that these places are again starting to become congested late at night.

Several motorists have already complained about the traffic at Juana Osmeña where private vehicles and taxi cabs are parked on both sides of the narrow street.

A reader sent this message at around midnight last weekend, “Naa pay CITOM ron nga time bay? Traffic man sa Juana Osmeña.”

Later on he sent this message, “How come the city allowed these establishments to open if wala silay ample parking?”

The reader was referring to those establishments across the elementary department of St. Theresa’s College where several bars have opened at the back portion, which used to be additional parking space.

Now, the habitués of the place have to park along the road.

We also see a long line of cabs again along Gen. Maxilom Ave. late in the evenings.  A reader told us, “Murag dili man sila hadlok sa city officials kay parking man gihapon sa dalan.”

He was referring to the taxi drivers who park on the road while waiting for passengers who are customers of the many bars in that once controversial arcade which Mayor Tommy Osmeña ordered closed.

Now the taxi cabs are there again.  Maybe an honest to goodness night patrol will help make our streets safer for everyone late in the evening.  “That is if our city officials care,” said a female reader who has given up on the CITOM and the city council.

“They just talk, they do nothing.  What it would take to make these high-profile councilors do something?”

A reader asked us if there is any that regulates the ownership of motorcycles.  He said that he wants to know if there is such thing because he sees so many motorcycles these days and some of them are driven by kids, who look like they don’t even have a license to drive.

We understand that there are existing laws about vehicle registration and licensing that would regulate who can operate motorcycles.  Unfortunately, we live in a country where so many laws are made, but many of them are not implemented.

What really needs regulation, we believe, are these motorcycle for hire drivers, who do not seem to care about the safety of their passengers or refuse to be courteous on the road and when they park their vehicles.

In our place of residence, it irritates us to see these motorcycles for hire being parked right at the corner of the narrow road or those parked in such a way that they are on the road.

The barangay officials of Pakigne in Minglanilla have been terrible in handling this problem and we hope, together with many more residents of the place, that whoever would seek the top post of the barangay would have plans to address this matter.
