Summer biz in the sky

If you look at the sky during summer, what you'll probably see is an immense expanse of turquoise blue dotted by occasional puffs of white that is a welcome sight to behold in the perfect 'blueness.' But then aside from these puffy cottony clouds, have you noticed something else dotting the peaceful blue of the summer sky? Something colorful and flimsy, which you can't help but gape at in amazement? But of course, with the coming of summer, who could miss these brilliant spectacles called kites disturbing the azure breadth of the sky? Guys, brace yourselves as summer will fly us high on its windy wings!

Aside from exhilarating pleasure it creates from watching it glide in the humid air of the season, kites also provide a robust source of income in the summertime, with classes temporarily suspended and kids with itching fingers trying to fly their latest summer toy. Mr. Jesus Espinosa, 65, a kite-maker from Camputhaw, certainly proves this statement to be a fact. No neophyte in this field, Mang Jesus started his summer business in 1958, roughly 48 years ago. His capital then was a mere P300.00, which he was able to made into 30 pieces of kites, with designs such as birds, dragonflies, airplanes and butterflies. The prices he set for his products range from P80.00-P150.00.

Though business is not as booming as before, Mang Jesus reveals that the small income he manages to set aside nevertheless traveled a long way in meeting the daily expenses of the family and paying the household bills. He said he was grateful for the moment since as Mang Jesus' proudly says he was able to gain something for summer. And being the wise businessman that he is, Mang Jesus reveals that he accept made to order kites and for those customers who buys in bulk, they can expect to have discounts. His little store is situated at Purok 4 Upper Camputhaw and his display area is in front of Capitol Parish in Escario tended by his daughter Jesuven Malacora.

Asked what indispensable assets he has learned so far in his 48 years of operation in the kite business, Mang Jesus' without hesitation, proudly shares, "creativity, hardwork and fun in what I'm doing."
