Walk, talk and listen

It was orange; that was the first attraction it had for me. I know, I know, but a colored cellphone is hard to resist. I like color – the funkier the better.

The packaging was another strong factor. Orange and new age. Not one of those regular boxes that most cellphones come in. Another plus point.

Of course, I must add that I have used a few Sony Ericsson cellphones and I have seen this cell grow from a hard-to-use and figure out contraption to an easy as A-B-C phone to use.

My attitude toward Sony Ericsson changed with the introduction of the P900. It made me look at Sony Ericsson with different eyes.

Since then, all the new Sony Ericsson mobile phones have not escaped my attention. I spend a lot of time surfing the Net, looking at what new mobile Sony Ericsson will come up with next. The P910i, S700i, Z600, T610 and K750i are some mobile phones I have been able to use.

One of the major changes with the K750i was the option of making a ringtone as a message alert. Although this was doable with the P910i, it was not so with the other Sony Ericsson phones until the K750i came along recently.

Enter the W800i.

First, of course, it is the Walkman phone. Truly a delight for music lovers who love cellphones just as much. OK, so those of you who prefer to have a separate MP3 player might find the W800i a bit too small for all the music you would love to load. But mind you, the W800i comes with a 512 MB memory stick. And from what we are told there is a Sony or Sandisk two-gigabyte memory stick which is available at most computer shops and can be used with the W800i. Yet for people like me who don’t have to have a lot of music on my phone, this phone is a dream come true.

The quality of the music is fantastic; of course, we are talking about Sony and Ericsson. The W800i has an internal memory of 34MB.

And for those who like to travel with just the music, the W800i has an option of being just that. When you turn on the unit you can opt to use it just as a Walkman and listen all you want on a flight.

I asked a friend to help me download some songs into the phone. Since my friend had a Mac, we thought it would be a problem. But surprise, it was easy as pie. All we had to do was connect the W800i to the USB port of the Mac and drag the songs onto the memory stick. Great. The phone does come with a CD which can be installed in a PC and then songs loaded into the phone. But there was no need for that.

I must mention the really cool headset that comes with the phone. This headset is made really comfy and at least when I used them, they did not hurt my ears. And if you get tired of the songs you’ve downloaded into your phone, you can always listen to the FM radio.

What more could I ask for?

That’s just the music.

The two-megapixel camera is the next big thing about this wonder of a phone. Shoot all you want, the resolution won’t let you down. Gorby, my poodle, hates the phone though I always try to catch him with it. The camera on the unit is used just like a regular camera is.

You have to turn the phone from the upright position to a sideways position in order to get the best shots. But with two megapixels how can one go wrong? Sony Ericsson also took into consideration the little things like making sure that the camera has a lever that slides to open the lens of the camera and slides to close it, too. This makes sure that the lens of the camera is well protected. The zoom function is good and is located on the side of the camera, so it lets you get pretty close to your subject.

The other features like WAP, MMS, e-mail and the like are also on the phone, but with today’s cellphones they have become the standard. And this phone does not fail in any of these departments either.

The emoticons of Sony Ericsson are some of the cutest around. They are animated and fun to send to people who also have Sony Ericsson phones. Sometimes words can’t convey a mood, but these emoticons can very well do that.

Texting and sending MMS are easy on the Sony Ericsson. Depending on which mobile you are used to, it is easy to learn how to work a Sony Ericsson. And in this day and age, the best person is one who is open to all sorts of technology and isn’t afraid of giving new things a try.

For those who like to pass the time playing games, there are two games on this phone. I like the Quadrapop. Much like Tetris but with music notes the like to keep you occupied. The other is a puzzle game.

And as a phone, hey, it’s perfect. It keeps you connected. It’s got a volume control for voice. It doesn’t hang in the middle of a conversation and the volume of its ringtones is good.

From what I hear, the next mobile from Sony Ericsson promises to be another must-have cell.
