Oracle takes more of the Web to wireless devices

SAN FRANCISCO – Oracle Corp., one of the largest providers of software for e-Business, has announced the pending availability of Oracle9i Application Server Wireless Edition, a complete middleware for developing and deploying wireless Internet content and application services.

Oracle9i Application Server Wireless Edition leverages Oracle’s unique Portal-to Go technology and is targeted at carriers, consumer portals, application service providers (ASPs) and corporations.

The new version will include pre-built adapters for wireless e-mail and directory integration as well as enhanced support for location-based services – the key technology for creating the next generation of wireless commerce and logistical applications that deliver personalized services based on the users’ current location.

The new features in Oracle9i Application Server Wireless Edition add to Oracle’s strong position in providing the software infrastructure for the booming wireless market.

This market is expected to grow to approximately 1.2 billion subscribers worldwide by 2003, according to The Yankee Group.

Already, Oracle’s wireless software is enjoying a high adoption rate in Europe, the most mature of the existing markets for wireless infrastructure software.

"The convergence of Internet and wireless communications will result in millions of people accessing the Internet through wireless devices, creating large revenue opportunities for wireless platforms and applications," said David Bishop, director for wireless/mobile services of The Yankee Group.
