Painting the town green

MANILA, Philippines - The paint industry today offers the ability to quickly and accurately produce an almost infinite number of colors, yet it seems that the color that really matters these days—especially in celebration of Earth day— is green.

The current concept of what constitutes a green, or environmentally friendly coating is to minimize paint’s negative effect on human health and the environment. In fact, since most of discussion on eco-friendly paints has been so focused on VOC limits, this has almost become the singular measure of paint’s eco-friendliness.

But one overlooked, yet critical ingredient of paint’s eco-efficiency is its performance— particularly in terms of coverage and durability.

Just as these parameters are important in assessing a paint product’s value for money, they are also needed to take a more comprehensive assessment of paint “eco-friendliness.” Paint with better hiding and higher coverage means less gallons needed to cover a certain area, and the longer a coating lasts, the less frequent is painting.
