2 killed in Taguig checkpoint shootout

MANILA, Philippines — Two armed suspects have been killed in what police said was a shootout at a checkpoint in Barangay Western Bicutan, Taguig
Probers are checking whether the recovered guns were used in recent shootings.
Police said they flagged four motorcycle riders for helmet violations on Oct. 22. Two of the suspects allegedly drew firearms, threatened the officers and fled.
The two took refuge in a nearby house and allegedly fired at police despite repeated calls to surrender, prompting officers to retaliate.
Police recovered two firearms, including a 9mm pistol, for ballistic examination to determine possible links to three separate shootings in Taguig recently.
A motorcycle with a defaced engine number was also seized for examination.
Probers said one of the slain suspects had previous records of kidnapping for ransom, serious illegal detention and frustrated homicide. One of the two fleeing suspects also had criminal records.
Police have launched a manhunt for the two suspects and are preparing charges against them, including direct assault, grave threats and violations of Republic Act 10591, the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulations Act.
