TEST: Audi Q3

MANILA, Philippines - The Q3 is Audi’s compact crossover that currently represents the new entry-level model of its Q lineup led by the flagship Q7 and the midrange Q5. It shares platforms and various components with its A3 sibling and VW Golf corporate cousin and is positioned as an active-lifestyle crossover vehicle for the affluent market.

Globally, it’s available with three engine (two gas and one diesel) and two transmission (6-speed manual and 7-speed automatic) choices but in the Philippines, it comes only with a 2.0 TDI CRDi turbo-diesel engine mated to a 7-speed S Tronic automatic and Audi’s renowned quattro all-wheel-drive system. It retails for P3,490,000.

The engine makes generous power (177ps) and torque (380Nm) and is impressively smooth and silent for a diesel engine. The gearbox shifts smoothly when left in full auto but gives more decisive up- and downshifts when manipulated via paddle shifters. The power plant is good for a 7.9-second sprint from zero to 100 km/h and a top speed of 210 km/h.

Ride quality is typical Teutonic supple-yet-firm, thanks to a solid chassis and a very well-tuned suspension. It soaks up bumps and potholes with ease yet is wonderfully responsive.

Inside, you’ll find Audi’s typical high build quality and first-rate materials. Audi’s leathers and soft-feel plastics used on the dash and door panels are simply at the top of the automotive food chain. Space is generous despite the car’s compact dimensions, helped mostly by the high seating position. The cargo area is likewise commodious’ we didn’t try it, but it looks like it can swallow a mountain bike or two (with the rear seats folded).

Style-wise, there’s a lot going for the otherwise understated Q3. The trademark huge Audi grille and beady rectangular headlamps with LED park lights create a compelling front end. The side view is free from any ostentatious lines or curves but is clean and stylish in a Teutonically minimalist way; an air of youthful sportiness is projected by the steeply raked D pillar and tailgate. At the rear sleek LED taillamps finish off the Q3, adding a cutting-edge feel to its contemporary lines.

All things considered, it’s a strong competitor in the German compact SUV stakes and will truly give the BMW X3 and the Mercedes GLK a run for their money.
