Pastor catapults to Formula Renault lead

Filipino Enzo Pastor shot to the top of the Asian Formula Renault (AFR) standings after scoring victories in the last two rounds of the Asian Formula Challenge at the Johor Circuit in Malaysia.

This developed as Briton Mark Goddard extended his lead to 34 points in the Asian Formula 3 (AF3) series organized by the Malaysian Motor Sports Club in cooperation with Asian Formula 3 Corp. and Formula Racing Development.

Pastor had a perfect weekend at the track. Fresh from winning the previous race, the 20-year-old driver reprised his winning performance in Round 12 to overtake Franky Cheng of China in the race for the AFR drivers’ championship. He now has a sizable margin and only needs to finish third in the remaining two rounds to take the title.

"I now have a 22-point lead, which is a comfortable gap, Pastor said.

Malaysian Farriz Mohamed, meanwhile, managed to stay out of trouble this time to finish second behind Pastor. Farriz received a 10-second penalty in the previous round after he overtook another car under the yellow flag.

The final two rounds of the 2002 Asian Formula Challenge will be held at the Subic International Raceway in the Philippines on Oct. 27.
